Advice wanted

I have an energy-limiting chronic illness and am looking for online places to chat to people when I’m too tired to leave the house and am feeling lonely.

A friend has recommended Discord, but I don’t really know where to start. Any tips for there or other online spaces?

First they came for the eggs, and I did not speak out...
Because I was not at IHop.

Then they came for the food coloring, and I did not speak out...
Because I don't eat cereal.
Then they came for me... but I was already dead from starvation.

β€˜The #BBC presenter Evan Davis has been told he can no longer host a podcast about heat pumps due to the corporation’s concerns that discussing the technology risks β€œtreading on areas of public controversy”’

Controversial to #FossilFuel industry and #Reform voters who are trying to kneecap anything that will help us avert #ClimateBreakdown.

#HeatPumps are NOT controversial outside UK.

The #BBC might like to note that:

β€˜The global heat pump market size was estimated at Β£59.68 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.3% from 2023 to 2030.’

β€˜#HeatPumps have a coefficient of performance (COP) of around four, making them 3-5 times more energy efficient than gas boilers.’

β€˜In Europe, heat pump sales grew by nearly 40% in 2022, with air-to-water models seeing a jump of almost 50%.’

in reply to Juggling With Eggs

Also…

β€˜Globally, 177 million #HeatPumps have been installed. China (33%) had the most installations, followed by North America (23%) and Europe (25%). β€˜

β€˜Regarding regional market share, Asia Pacific dominated the heat pump market, accounting for 53.1% in 2022. This dominance is attributed to the availability of sizeable skilled labour at low cost’

UK is so far behind because of our rabid rightwing media.

What a load of crypto-fascist political bullshit. It's just people talking about a useful technology. The #BBC is supposed to be informative/educational. There's little enough decent science and tech programming on the BBC these days without good stuff being deliberately blocked!!

Let's see how today goes

Busiest day of the week at work, nothing special there, except that I twisted my ankle yesterday. Real fun to hear/feel your ankle go pop, and came down hard enough to scrape a few of my knuckles as well. Good news is that my ankle seems to be mostly fine, no significant pain, carries weight fine, although it hurts on uneven ground. Was rather swollen last night, but I've been icing it since I got home yesterday. Big test will be how it holds up to the work load #today

Capital One Gets the Greenlight to Move Forward With Discover Acquisition - CNET

Interesting, not entirely happy with this as I like my Discover card as it is, but this could get interesting, as Mastercard and Visa have a near monopoly control over credit card transactions.

Right now, if'n you buy something, it doesn't matter the bank on the card, nor the payment gateway the store uses, if'n it's a Mastercard or Visa, the transaction goes through their network, which is why they can force websites to restrict content. Capital One is one of the biggest credit card banks out there, so them switching networks is going to have a notable impact on MC and Visa, after all, those companies make money by charging a fee on every transaction, so C1 switching to Discover is going to take a lot of money away, and save C1 money as they won't have to pay for processing. Also since they collect interest on each account, they have a motivation to allow you to buy what you want to buy, so this might break MC and Visa's censorship.

@Octoomy

Yeaaa it is a bolted 12900H. It is for a really great price. It's just that the stability is really concerning to me.

I plan to use it to run TrueNAS Scale. It does have an 8x PCIe 4.0 slot, but I plan to put an A380 only anyways. Then the iGPU should be decent on paper. So it ticks all the boxes, if it runs stable.

I mean hey, if its a mobile i9 with true nas, throw a sas card in there and you're golden.

As a child, I watched G-rated, family-friendly movies where Nazis were bad actually and people who refused to cooperate with them were heroes.

I think the grownups of that time were trying to teach the kids something.

So the US Government argued that it had "rights?" Yeah, right. Cool story bro
in reply to The Icarian

Where did we think we'd end up if not here?

Every post Reagan president, particularly since GWB and the Patriot Act, has chipped away at our access to the courts.

What did we think the next step was going to be once the FBI began to entrap Muslim men on bogus 'terrorist' plots and send them to Guantanamo indefinitely? Or once the US began to use rendition sites all over the world? Or when the US rewrote the rules about the use of torture?

Everything that the US said was ok to use on an 'enemy' was eventually absolutely going to be turned back on us.

How could we *not* think this was going to be next?

I'm attempting to rig up my own hail cover for my car by putting 8 foot 2x4 boards strapped perpendicular to my car across my roof bars, then placing heavy moving blankets on hood, windshield and back hatch. Then I'm going to park on two more boards with eye hooks on the ends and stretch a 12mil tarp over the whole thing and tie it to the boards on the bottom. I need to start rigging it up before knowing if it will potentially work and if I need adjustment.

Thoughts or ideas anyone?

This paragraph from the excellent article in the Irish Examiner nails it.
#TransRights #SistersNotCISters
β€œIt’s too early to know the practical ramifications of Wednesday’s UK Supreme Court ruling on trans identities, in which the meaning of the Gender Recognition Act was reversed without a single testimony from a trans person being heard, but said ruling has been a source of lip-smacking delight for the fringe group of gender-critical activists who have worked hard to making Britain the Anglosphere’s uncontested capital of galloping, gleeful transphobia.
And it is this glee, this sheer horrible joy at everything being done, that can be so hard to swallow, so wearying to comprehend. It’s not enough that decades of slow, painful advances in human rights and basic decency can be reversed in a matter of weeks, it’s that we must watch the world’s collective ghouls cackling loudly with ecstasy as it happens”

UPDATE;
I am adding this long and excellent article from The Gist, because it’s a really important one; it clarifies where the UK has gone wrong, and where the EU gives protections for trans people. It also points out at the end that the UK is going to have a little issue with that ruling from the Supreme Court….

Another important edit. - the science on genetics DNA and the variety of genders. The transphobes, Starmer and the Supreme Court judges really need to read and understand all of this.
