It's a day fit for a king

Now here's one you don't expect a cover for, though modern swing is the right style for it, no?

Time to jet

This is from the Armageddon soundtrack, and I can't really say why I have a copy of that, I haven't seen the movie, but I must've heard something from the soundtrack and decided to get it, and it wasn't this song, rather this was a pleasant surprise from it. I can't say that it's better than Peter, Paul and Mary's version, but it's a fine version.

Time for a strange cover

Not much of note in this one, original was by The Doors, whose keyboardist produced this version

Time to get crazy

Finally having to dip into my collection to come up with songs, not bad for twenty-three days in, right? I've got three versions of this in my collection, Queen's original, Dwight Yoakam's, and this one, though I should try the Stray Cats version as well and see how it differs as Brian fronts both groups.

Speaking of the Stray Cats, my alternate choice for today was Rock This Town, but would the Brian Setzer Orchestra version even count as a cover?

Time to ride

This is my favorite version of the song, but there's lots of covers and some of them are... interesting. Two funny things to note about this song, the original Allman Brothers version didn't chart, and this version falls into the other covers section of the Wikipedia page. Not sure which version I heard first, this or the Allman Bros, after all they're a staple of classic rock stations and often show up on rock stations, both of which I tend to listen to, but I think it really works as a country song especially when done by Hank Williams Jr.

Some traveling music today

So, I don't have much to say about this song, heard this version, then tripped over the original by Old Crow Medicine show, which is great, but boy is there a lot to say about it. Seriously, just hit the Wikipedia page, this song had a wild gestation. Oh, and I didn't realize it was the band Lady Antebellum providing the backing vocals.

Not surprised that this is a cover

I mean Dwight Yoakam does like his covers, but this Elvis tune doesn't seem to get many covers, certainly nothing as big as this.

Broke a mini goal

So, with yesterday's addition to covers month, I finally broke a mini-goal. Honestly I'm surprised it took this long, but I had been trying both to repeat no songs and repeat no artists. I suppose I could split hairs on yesterday, it was the second appearance of Willy Nelson, however this time he was with Merle Haggard, last time he was with Paul Simon, so technically the artists are different, but that's really splitting hairs.

There are artists whose covers I won't be sharing, like the Cleverlys, I mean their music is great, should hear their cover of Beck's Loser, it's great, but they do these covers only because it's funny, fundamentally they're a comedy band, and I prefer serious attempts when covering a song. I'm also skipping Puddles and Post Modern Jukebox, since as good as they are, they're kinda specialized I guess? Honestly not sure about those two, my opinion might change.

So, if'n you haven't been keeping up with the #music I've been sharing, there's two ways to do so, my #YouTube playlist, or by going directly to my cover songs posts.

Blame Willie's Roadhouse on SXM

I mean they keep finding me originals or covers I've never heard of, and when looking into it, sometimes I find surprising things, like the fact that this, what I would call the definitive version of the song, is a cover.

youtu.be/UoKvUYbGu7A

Apparently it was originally written by Townes Van Zandt and released on his 1972 album, and over by Emmylou Harris, the version I was introduced to today, and others, with this version obviously being the best known. And technically it's not about Pancho Villa, that's just a coincidence according to Townes, in fact the original spelling was Poncho and Lefty, with different printings of the Nelson & Haggard version having different spellings, sometimes with differences between the record, record sleeve and liner notes.

What's to say about this? Just a good song well sung.

There's no sign of me stopping

Forgot to mention

That I decided to create a playlist with all the cover songs I'm sharing this month.

youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfO…

So far, half way into the month, I've run entirely off of covers I remember, songs I've heard on the radio, and YouTube suggestions, with no repeating of artists or songs. Today I finally had to resort to looking at my collection to jog my memory or find songs.

So, for any that haven't been keeping up, have some #music

Band wasn't a hard choice

Nor really was the song. While they've done plenty of awesome covers and I could've chosen any one, this one is likely my favorite video, just a really cool sci-fi piece that really changes the song.

Took me a bit to decide which cover

I mean it's been covered a lot, in fact no one really knows where the song started, but it predates recorded music. Lots of good versions out there, but I was down to either Spiderbait or Caravan Palace, and decided on electro-swing in the end.

Let's keep this thing running

Yep, another day, another cover.

Is there a bad version of this song? While I'm not a huge fan of Kate Bush's original, I mean it's good, I much prefer the version by Placebo or Track and Field, though this version has a really cool video.

youtu.be/N7iVWK2W48o

Let's go country

I wasn't aware of this cover until one of Johnny Cash's American albums, and I think I like his better than Lefty Frizzell's original

youtu.be/3DZLI68Cgvs

We promised one every day

And no eighteen hour work day is going to stop us.

This song's been covered a lot of times, but this is the only one I know of to tweak the list of problems in the world, adding a few 80s items to the list.

I tend to forget this is a cover

Both versions are great, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Five Finger Death Punch, no way I can choose between the two, but this version is particularly special, 5FDP got Brian May, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Brantley Gilbert (?) for it.

youtu.be/p8NQUbLQGio

Is there a bad version of this song?

I mean I've heard the big three, but also a few covers, all of which were at least different. You can thank SXM for turning me onto this version last night.

youtu.be/-7rRPoOvkY4

Forgot this was a cover

I grew up with this version, so it is the one I prefer, but I gotta say the original by Brownsville Station is quite good, and shockingly never seems to show up on any classic rock, oldies, or similar stations, which seems a bit of a shame.

youtu.be/5oVBvxA0mm0

Honestly never thought I'd see a cover of this

Funny thing is that YouTube offered not just this halfway decent one, but also one by... Headstone I think it was. Headstone's is not real good, the added rock beat sounds generic, and the singer seems uninterested in what he's singing, it's like he's just going through the motions. The Punch Brothers version isn't great, but it is an interesting take, definitely worth giving a listen to.

youtu.be/8JLU9wXu-4M

in reply to 🌴 Seph πŸ’ πŸ‘Ύ

Punch Brothers are best described as Americana, Nu Grass. They cover pop songs too for fun, Radiohead in particular. Chris Thile, the singer and mandolin player is in another band called Nickel Creek, which is closer to folk. Punch Brothers emerged at around the same time as some other bands like Mumford and Sons that echoed the folk music of the past with a current vibe.
in reply to Mark Wollschlager

@Mark Wollschlager Nickel Creek I've heard of, I think they're the one's behind one of Avicii's songs (he just mixes them), pretty good band, but I'll definitely need to give them all a look.

Anyone here?

Yep, it's that time again...

What did I promise?

I will say that I think of this as a Presley song, so imagine my surprise to know that it's a Chuck Berry song, and the Freddy Weller version predates Elvis'.

youtu.be/OiaDI0bwUcs

Y'all prolly starting to think I forgot about day 5

Assuming anyone is actually paying attention, perish the thought. Let's be lazy, one I've shared before, and really like both it and the video, it's amazing how much making this song heavy metal really changes it. And then the video from MacFarlane Studios...

We've heard Elvis...

Now let's go to Graceland. Never knew this was a thing, but apparently it's a product of Farm Aid from 1992, and I only heard it for the first time a few days ago on my new thrifted copy of The Essential Willie Nelson.

youtu.be/KId0MCDuD1I

Could I do a covers month without this one?

I'd argue this might be better than the original, unlike most covers which are just really interesting takes on an existing song and rarely match the original.

youtu.be/9D7ultFfoiM

Today's cover is...

one that I heard today for the first time. We were trying out a new restaurant for breakfast, Mario's Gyros in St Peters, and they were playing Elvis, nothing but Elvis, and this came on. He's got a good voice for this song.

@HU Art Sound (2) Which song? You mean Teenage Dirt Bag? Definitely a better song, but I like how silly this thing is, it really makes no sense whatsoever, which is what makes it fun.
in reply to 🌴 Seph πŸ’ πŸ‘Ύ

Yes that one was more fun IMHO.
Ever-since Colbert got the CBS Late Show, he flattened out from where he came from at Comedy Central.

Ah, a Christmas song that's so familiar
