Google Voice alternatives?
I've been using my GV number as my phone number on FB because there's no way I'm giving them my main number, but the problem is that Facebook now sees what I'm shopping for on my other tablet. Yes, aside from the phone number, FB is on a separate device that shares a WiFi connection, so the leak is cause by Google Voice or my network, and I'm leaning towards GV, which is an easy one to plug... I assume?
At this point the only thing that GV offers that's important to me is the ability to use it through a computer as well as my phone, so I'm thinking some type of VOIP that has an app and a web interface? I don't mind paying a small fee for the latter, though I don't need a full on business VOIP solution, which is where you usually find web interfaces.

DeltaChat for the win
Ok, maybe not for the win per se, but I am switching over to DeltaChat as I really only have two people I share with.
While its not perfect, it works well enough for me, I just send the occasional message, link or image to others or m'self, and it does that fine. This time around, I've got the sticker thing sorta fixed, Android doesn't offer a sticker option, something I need to see if'n I can figure a work around for, but I've got it working well on my desktop. I've also tried the Mastodon bridge, and that works fine, but having your home timeline show up as chat messages get old fast, notifications are a little bit better, but still, bad idea. There is a Telegram bridge, but that looks like it only works to bridge Telegram Groups to DeltaChat, so that's not all that great.
So what is DeltaChat? Its an email based encrypted messenger. You can use an existing email address, though I don't recommend that, or get one from DeltaChat or a couple other servers. Clients exist for Linux, MacOS, iOS, Android... And I suppose there's one for Windows too.
I guess if'n anyone wants to try it, or has questions, I can try to answer them, just shout at me here.

You can use this keyboard app on Android to use stickers in DeltaChat!

— (STL, MO, US, Earth)@Hiro Lynx ๐พโซ๐ง I'd heard something about that, but hadn't tried it. Not sure how well it'll work, but we'll see if'n I can get it installed and working, animated images don't seem to work in the Android client though
EDIT
That works very nice, thanks. Wonder if'n iOS needs a solution like that or if'n it just works.
@sfwrtr Unfortunately not, I wish they would integrate the stickers in the app directly.
However there seems to be some way to use the native iOS keyboard for this:
support.apple.com/en-in/guide/โฆ
It seems to be supposed to work with Deltachat, as there is a solved issue about it in their GitHub, with a little video:
github.com/deltachat/deltachatโฆ
I've not used an Apple product in ages myself so I hope it works!
sending stickers stopped working
adding stickers from the keyboard stopped working completely with the recent changes instead if being set, they are added in-line to the text field - and the ignored on sendingr10s (GitHub)

Deltachat mobile doesn't support stickers [workaround].
I found a good workaround that works well for #Apple #Mac, not quite a sticker picker but similar amount of clicks on iPad and iPhone. I like the odds that it would work on #windows and #linux versions.
- On Desktop apps, display your installed stickers and find a Show Sticker Folder button at the bottom.
- Click button. This displays the folders with .webp files.
- Create a Delta folder at the top level in iCloud (or whatever).
- Copy all the sticker folders to iCloud.
- In a #iPad or #iPhone chat, use ๐ (paperclip) button.
- Tap Files.
- Navigate to iCloud Delta folder and drill down to sticker folder, then double-click the sticker you want. The .webp file will be inserted, and the mobile app shows it animated!
- If you selected a sticker, the picker will remember the folder for next time.
Optional: Tell Files to display icons. To the extent that works in Files on the iPad and iPhone (questionable), you will see the key image for the sticker.

Popular Mechanics ain't what it used to be, huh?
Saw an article on Flipboard that was from Popular Mechanics via AppleNews, so I couldn't open it on my phone. No problem, just go to the site and search, right? Almost the entire first page of results for off grid solar were 'articles' about great sales on solar panels, power banks and the like.

Have you thought of using umatrix on your shopping tablet?
I once made a joke at a friend's place where I was staying the night, and the punchline involved me saying the word "pineapple" quite loudly.
A couple hours later, I went to bed, and I used a brand new laptop with a fresh Linux OS to go to YouTube and check for some videos. As soon as I opened YouTube, I was greeted with dozen upon dozen of pineapple videos.

in reply to 7heo • • •They most likely configured their phones with all sorts of GAFAM accounts and, from simply sharing their IP address, I was associated with any keyword their devices picked.
So, yeah, it can be potentially pretty freaky, but in the end, it is almost always either a rogue microphone or a rogue JavaScript dependency.

I don't get how this makes them unable to constantly listen to your microphone, and constantly log all you do (and buy).
And then sell this data to anyone (including, ofc, facebook).
Absolutely get rid of google voice, I'm not gonna stop you there, that's a great first step. But don't be surprised if the leak doesn't stop. Your public IP is a much likelier identifier here than a phone number.
