Microsoft thinks you should recycle pcs that can't be upgraded to windows 11...
Please do not do this. Try linux or give them to someone else who will, or donate them to charitable organizations.
Goblins need spare computers everywhere!
#question
Can we have a #hashtag on here for people who wish to discard perfectly good computers, so other people on here who are less fortunate can get them and use linux or something?
Any opinions on a best hashtag for that?
*edit @generationX mentioned a hashtag, #computertruhe (which is a group or the german equivalent to this paying it forward of computers or related parts, and is active on mastodon!) This may translate to #computerchest and is the best lead on a relevant hashtag for this purpose so far!
#retux (for games?)
possibly #upcycling
Unique for this purpose suggested:
#takemytech (at least 2 votes!)
#sparePChere
#pc2hand
by area:
@PCsfueralle for Austria, like computertruhe for DE
#LinuxInstallParty may be relevant! DE I think!
#FreeGeek for #Portland and maybe #Minneapolis !
#Debian 12 Bookworm made installation and GUI much easier than previous versions, including nonfree repositories for proprietary driver support! Debian 13 Trixie (stable) drops later this year. It is upstream and all about open source, as a Linux option.

I truly do not understand why US scientists are not sending every scintilla of data on their research projects to every other scientist in other countries.
Just package it up and send the harddrive second-day air. Let them distribute it outside the aegis of the Sad Murder Clown and his Incel Nazi Commandant.
The US is actually a small, silly country that despite every advantage couldn't manage to not kill itself.
Cut bait and save the knowledge. The country is irrelevant.

A surprising car maker has overtaken Tesla as America's fastest-growing EV brand
Not sure why the author is surprised at this, GM has been working towards this for a while, re-tooling factory after factory to electric car production, and taking a page from 80's Chrysler in that they're using one chassis for everything.
Yes, really, whether it's a Hummer, Equinox, Brightvan or any of the others, they all use the same chassis, width and length changes, but it's the same chassis. Batteries are also basically the same, same modules assembled into packs of different sizes and shapes, and the interiors share heavily, as well as using the same software across all of them.

3.5 Million people were marching in the streets of the US yesterday.
Thatβs 1% of the entire population that came out.
More than the populations of Vermont, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota combined.
Almost the entire population of Austin, Dallas, and Houston together.
The 1963 March on Washington was 1/14 the size. Adjusted for population, yesterday was still SEVEN Marches On Washington.
It was as though the entirety of Mongolia went marching.

Another thing I need to mention about yesterday's protest in Wheeling, WV. At one point, a funeral procession rolled through with about a dozen cars. Everybody went completely silent. The bullhorns and the chanting stopped. Signs were lowered. Ball caps were removed. We shared a moment of silence, all without a single order to do so. It was a beautiful moment seeing so much dignity and respect coming from a group of people.

If you block a server using the "domain block" feature on Mastodon, this will cause you to lose any follows or followers you have on that server. The exact number of follows/followers you would lose are shown at the top of the warning when you do the block.
However, if you have done the block accidentally or if you have changed your mind about the block, here is a guide to how you can unblock the server and restore your follows and followers:

I am tired of dancing around things, and it is time to call things for what they are.
MAGA is a terrorist organization, ICE is a secret police force conducting ethnic cleansing, Elon Musk is an oligarch, and Donald John Trump is a foreign-backed agent trying to destabilize our government.
This is no longer an administration, but this very much is a regime, and our country is being occupied.

'Most disturbing website on internet' can find almost every single picture that exists of you
I gave it a try, and got unsurprising results, two pics from my online gallery and nothing else. Honestly, not a surprise, I've tried searches for m'self in the past and find little if anything, I've somehow managed to avoid any evidence that I exist... That or I'm a figment of my own imagination.

One lesson I'd like to share about organising protests against the far-right and authoritarianism. Here in Munich, where we had protests with 200.000+ participants in 2024 and 2025, there was one simple rule.
No politicians were allowed to speak on stage. Only activists and victims speak.
The politicians, no matter what they promise at a protest, go back to their parliaments, think they've done enough and continue with business as usual. So remember: It's our protest. Not their photo-op. 1/4

Which is another way to say, this is a lost battle long time ago.
The hope is that it was never enough of an incentive (and some risk awareness too, if they'd get caugth) for all those hardware/firmware companies to actually embed such shit into their products - because the business gain is not really that big.

There's a registry flag for that and you cna flash an .iso without the requirement checks I think. Both are officially documented by Microsoft so it's not like the sleaziest thing.
I don't know why they even have this lower bound of hardware. Makes no sense to me. I think they want to make Win11 appear more smooth by only having it on machines that would have run smooth anyway
