"What are you working on?"

I put the soldering iron on its stand and inspected my work.

"A time travel receiver. I figured out the machine can't travel in time itself."

"Do you have a transmitter too?"

I plugged the power in. "Not yet."

A newspaper appeared in the machine.

"I will, next year."

it will twist your time-travelling head off! It’s featured in this xkcd xkcd.com/657/ and has a great backstory too
in reply to Micro SF/F by O. Westin

@Synchro It has a great idea about time travel in that they build a box that simply reverses time while you're inside it. So if you want to go back an hour, you have to spend an hour in the box. And if you want to go back a week, be prepared to spend a week in the box and pack supplies. So it's not a trivial "jump to whenever" time travel.

They start to use it, successfully, on minor tests, and everything seems alright. Then things start unraveling...

As a Christian myself, I agree with this.

That form of Christianity is formed by hate and thus, when it succeeds the only one who would be happy would be the devil himself.

I can't think of a better way to scare away converts from religion then to manipulate people who are religious into acting stupid and proud.

Is there a sort of LinkedIn for Free software nerds? I'm thinking a (fedi, obviously) social network where you can post your CV, tech interests, project history, etc. as a way of working together, talking about the stuff we're building, and creating a profile around contributors.

If there is, I'd love to join. If there isn't, I'd love to build one.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is running a shadow operation inside the White House in an effort to sideline pro-Ukraine officials,
the Kyiv Independent has learned.

Witkoff — a real estate mogul with no diplomatic background before his appointment — has emerged as one of the central architects of a new Washington peace proposal that Ukrainian officials say revives the Kremlin's most sweeping demands.

A source in Ukraine's President's Office earlier said that Witkoff is shaping the plan in direct coordination with Kirill Dmitriev,
-- Russia's top economic negotiator and an operator in Moscow's efforts to influence Washington.

"He has been doing it for months," the source said, mentioning Witkoff's 28-point plan that has been seen in Kyiv as a de facto capitulation to Russia.

They want you to think building platforms like TikTok requires billions in VC funding.

Reality: Laravel, Vue, federation, and a vision beyond profit.

@loops is my middle finger to tech gatekeepers who said only monopolies can build this.

High school dropout + open source + refusing to compromise = your federated TikTok.

The tools were always free. They just didn't want you to know.

I don't think it takes billions to build a platform but it does seem that it usually requires millions to get more than a few people using it.

I have accounts on loops, lemmy/piefed, mastodon, element and more. I've never met a person IRL that uses them and I've never gotten to know anyone in an online community (gaming, interest forums, etc.) that use them. Viewing my loops app makes me feel like I'm alone on an island. The communities I follow on Lemmy/Piefed will go weeks without a post. The communities I manage will go the same without a submission from the community. Now that my immediate family have grown tired of the bugs on element after I forced them to use it to chat with me, I am literally the only person I know on the messaging platform.

I love open source but if I were the type of person that required a true sense of a well-rounded social community, I would use something like tiktok to scratch that itch.

in reply to dansup

@dansup @loops Now if'n I could only get someone to build the platform I want, the one that should exist.

"Sadly, everytime a company adds AI features to their tools they do so automatically and without letting people opt-out by default. And so it is necessary to exorcize AI features out of the tools that we use ourselves by following these instructions:

uBlockOrigin
Firefox
Gmail
Google
DuckDuckGo
Github
Youtube
UBlockOrigin
uBlockOrigin is a free, open source ad content blocker. I've been using it as an add-on on Firefox for many years.

Consider adding this extension to your browser so that in turn you can add this AI blocklist with 1000+ websites of AI-generated content to it.

Firefox
Doing the following will remove hot AI garbage such as Smart Tab Grouping, automatic tab naming, and an optional AI chatbot in the sidebar.

Type about:config in the address bar, press enter and accept the warning.

Search for(separately) and set the following entries to false:

browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled
browser.ml.chat.enabled

Type about:addons in the address bar, on the left side menu click on On-Device AI and remove downloaded models(if any), and disable automatic updates.

Gmail
The first step is to open Gmail in the browser.

Then click on the Gear Settings Icon(⚙️) in the upper right corner of the page.

In the General Tab, scroll down to Smart Features and UNCHECK THE BOX(halfway down).

Then, right below that is yet another monstrosity: Google Workspace smart features. Click on Manage Workspace Smart Features and make sure both accursed toggles are turned OFF.

WARNING! It is worth mentioning that doing this will turn off automatic email filtering and lump in your emails together in your main inbox(I was told it shouldn't happen if you made those labels yourself). Turning off the above settings will also prevent Gmail events from being synced to your Google Calendar(events are pulled from your emails and put on your calendar automatically.

Consider moving away from Google services by switching to other mail services like Startmail, Migadu(that's what I use) or Posteo.

Google
When using Google as a search engine you will get AI Overviews showing up first. There is no way to disable it permanently when making searches from the google.com homepage, but there are ways to bypass it:

By using web search. On the Google search engine homepage make a search and then select Web from the tabs below the search bar. If you can't see it there, click on “More” in the search menu and select Web so you only get website results. (Evidently, this option still sucks because you have to view their damned overview before turning it off.)

Bypass it using your web browser. It's possible to bypass Google's AI overviews via your web browser by going into the browser's search settings and creating a new entry which will tell Google to only give you classic web results(using &udm=14).

To do this in Firefox, type:

about:preferences#search in the address bar.

In the Search shortcuts section, disable Google, then ADD a new browser with the following settings:

Search engine name: Google (web)
URL: google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
Keyword: Google (web)
When you want to make searches using Google via Firefox, select the desired search engine in the address bar's dropdown menu(left side). It'll now say "Google (web)"(the entry you created) in the search bar on the left.

Disable trending searches

While on the Google search engine homepage, click on Settings in the lower righthand side of the window, and then select Search Settings.

Select Privacy & Safety and under Content turn Search personalization OFF.

Again in Search settings, on the left side menu click on Other settings and disable Autocomplete with trending searches.

Evidently, using alternatives to Google would be best, but I too sometimes find myself using it(when I don't get results from DuckDuckGo). At least with these settings, I won't be bothered by any AI nonsense.

One day I might just give up and browse the yester-web(pre-2022 internet) via Wayback Machine, or take refuge in Gopher, or Gemini(the internet protocol. I hate that Google also took over this name for their AI agent).

DuckDuckGo
For web searches, it's possible to use the HTML-only DDG, and the NO AI version of DDG. You can add these to Firefox by adding them to your search settings(by typing about:preferences#search in the address bar and adding the browsers under Search Shortcuts).

If you want to stick to the original DDG, modify it by going to Settings AI Features, then:

Turn off Duck.ai
Set Search Assist to NEVER in the dropdown menu
Turn Hide AI-generated images ON

Click on Save And Exit and refresh the page before making a new search.

Github
Github's AI tool is called Copilot. You may have noticed that Github now has a pesky "Ask anything" section that appears in your account page, to get rid of it click on your avatar image on the top right of the screen and click on Copilot settings.

Under a section called Visibility is an option called Show Copilot, setting it to DISABLED will hide Copilot features.

Youtube
First off, this is unrelated to AI, but for your well-being I do recommend installing Untrap, an awesome add-on for YouTube, I highly recommend it. I've stripped it all the way down, my homepage is just a search bar, settings, my avatar, and few links in the left side bar and it is... effing glorious. My Youtube experience is so much better for it. Nothing shows up unless I look for it.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an option that disables AI features globally for Youtube... yet. There doesn't seem to be a way to get those annoying and often innacurate AI summaries to go away either(no more than choosing not to expand the tabs), but here are things that you can do:

Youtube Studio AI Features(for creators)

If you have a YouTube creator account, while in YouTube Studio click on Settings, then on Channel, then click on the Advanced Settings Tab. Scroll down and uncheck anything under Video Quality Enhancements and under Third party training uncheck the box that allows them to train their AI model on your videos.

Turn off auto-dubbing

I don't have any auto-dubbing as an option on my account yet, but it's coming(I got an email about it). For those who have it, to disable auto-dubbing on long videos, click on the Gear Icon ⚙️(or 3 dots for phone users) on the top righthand corner of the video screen, select Audio track and select Original audio track.

For those who use YouTube studio, click on Settings, then on Channel, then click on the Advanced Settings Tab, scroll down and uncheck the box under Auto-dubbing."

Here's an alt-text description of the image:

This is a public service announcement poster with a serious and cautionary tone. It features a portrait of a person in a blue and white striped shirt, appearing to be in the midst of smoking something, possibly a cigarette or a joint. The background is a blurry, neutral color. Prominent text on the poster reads: "This Thanksgiving remember the cranberry sauce, but forget the Marijuana." Below that, it states: "Terry was convinced to take a 'toke' of a joint with his friend 'just to relax'. Immediately after, Terry killed his friend who had given him the marijuana in a murderous craze. Not so safe, is it?" At the bottom, the text "Marijuana. Not Even Once." is displayed, along with a small logo for Ad Council and contact information.

Servers are safer to use if a setting called "authorized fetch" (also known as "secure mode") is switched on. Ordinary members cannot activate it, it can only be activated by the server's admin.

When it's activated it makes blocks much more effective and greatly reduces unwanted interactions.

You might want to ask your server admin to switch it on. If they're unsure about it, they can find lots more info and step-by-step instructions at fedi.tips/authorized-fetch
