Hey car people...have a question.
Car battery was pretty dead, but I eventually was able to get it jumped with my pack, thankfully.
Now that I'm in a communal garage, though, there's no way to get AC power to a charger unit while I'm parked there. And I'd like the capability of doing occasional battery maintenance without having to get it to someone's house and plugging a charger pack in.
Does a portable power supply that can actually *charge* a car battery without being plugged in exist anymore? I only say "anymore" because I *used* to own one that fit the bill...believe we gave it to a friend that needed something like it right before we left Louisiana for an apartment that had a garage with an outlet. It was nice, a bulky but reliable sealed lead-acid supply with USB and a decent inverter with two outlets.
Been having a hell of a time finding one / figuring out the right search terms to filter results for the thing that I need. Speed isn't an issue, I'm perfectly okay with 1A, in fact the slower the better. Just something to refresh the battery after a period of time it isn't driven often, which is, well...more often here in a place that isn't quite as car-dependent for the basics.
Found a DeWalt product that's a booster that serves a similar purpose, but would rather go with less current push to not needlessly wear out the battery faster (it's only 1.5 years old, for reference). Let me know if you know of anything!

It was NSW police officers that were effective in stopping the attack in the end. Two of them are among the 38 people injured. In the videos I have seen, none of them ran away from the attackers. I'm betting none of them had anything but handguns. The attackers had longarms.

If you can't handle someone criticising your government then you're not a citizen, you're a cult member.
No #government needs your support and you watching their back. Criticism of them is not criticism of you, don't take it personally.
Frankly, every govt deserves criticism and needs people holding them to account. That's why we have the media and elections.

So i need some input.
I think to replace my unify gear for european / open source one.
And i heavily hesitate between an opensource router with opnsense (from eu).
Or a mikrotik router.
Can any #network or #mikrotik #opensense #pfsense user give me any input.
Also does the one you own provide update / system update to EU server (even as mirror).
i need multiple wifi AP that share the same network
Thanks

I'm not an expert, but I'd probably go with the DIY open source approach a supported hardware platform. There you'd full control over the software mirrors and such details.
I use Plasma Cloud access points myself. While they're not technically European, they're not American, either.
It's that time of year where I like to remind everyone that "relatives" and "family" aren't the same thing, nor need they be
Relatives are people you are related to
Family are people who love you
Maybe there's some overlap, maybe there isn't - there's no wrong answer here.
But whatever you do, try not to let your relatives make you feel like you owe them anything - because you don't
Relatives are a cosmic accident, family is a relationship found and built
Anyway, stay safe out there

Why & how this fascist takeover?
US oligarchs had always existed, but, until the 1970s, they tolerated some democracy.
The four simultaneous uprisings of the 60s gave them nightmares involving guillotines, so they launched this now culminating fascist project.
The Powell memo of 1971 was the launch pad. Rockefeller founded TriCom to dismantle the "excess of democracy" of the 1960s.

I have a Stanley SimpleStart, which just recharges the battery, but they stopped making them quite a few years ago. People want to start their car NOW, not 30 minutes from now.
You might be able to get a battery pack like an Anker Solix C300 & pair it with a small trickle charger. A 1 Amp charger should only draw about 15 Watts, 5 Amp about 60 W; the C300 is rated to 300W. A 1 Amp charge will take about 60 hours to fully charge a standard car battery, 2A about 30 hrs, 5A about 12.

If you're worried about leaving it sitting outside, you can usually get adapters that let you connect the trickle charger to your cigarette lighter, IF your car is the type that leaves the socket energized at all times. This is how I keep my Chevy Caprice and Ford Expedition batteries topped up.
If your car switches off the socket when the engine is off, that won't work.

Why did those get discontinued? Of course they had some physical limitations/challenges, like Janus said, but did they really sell that poorly?
I'm not sure about the physics of taking power from the round DC outlet to charge the battery. Not challenging your experience, but I can't mentally get over that defying physical laws, unless I'm thinking about this incorrectly...
I'm not as concerned with getting a full charge, I'll happily disconnect, charge the bank, and do it again if I have to. Just maintaining it around 80% charge works well enough for me. I think I can impose safely on friends to plug it into their garage every once in a while, just don't want to do it regularly.
Will look into those products, thank you!

The C300 and C1000 have AC outlets, so you would plug the trickle charger into one of those. Then connect the charger to the car battery, or to the cigarette lighter socket. You can charge the car's battery through the lighter socket, it's not much different than connecting it directly to the battery.
Depending on your car, the lighter is usually fused at about 10-20A, so it should be able to handle most trickle chargers. Some cars turn off the socket when the engine is off.

in reply to Fun-sized tiger dad • • •Hmm, interesting idea. To be fair, the lead acid portable jumper packs aren't good at charging car batteries.
Most are designed for current at lower voltages (say 10-12v, enough for the starter). They might have 13v fresh off the charger, but that won't last long.
Trickle chargers are usually 2a at around 13.5v. You need the consistent float voltage.
You'd probably have better luck with solar converters as they usually output more volts with fewer amps. No sun in winter tho...
janusfox ๐
in reply to janusfox ๐ • • •Trickle chargers often do tricks with variable voltages to keep the battery healthier, and may also have desulfate modes and such. It's really the best way to handle it.
I'm not sure something portable exists, it'd need a big hecking battery, way more volts, say 14-18v, maybe some sort of dc to dc converter, and purpose built circuitry would be a nice to have, but you'd still have to recharge that thing every few days too.
It might be easier to install a battery disconnect switch.

in reply to janusfox ๐ • • •@janusfox First off, thank you for the insight!
I'm concerned about the physical limitations of such a setup, too. That previous product *did* work, however, on a battery that powered the whale of my husband's car he had back in the 2000s (Chrysler 300m). I'm sure it was built to mitigate the inherent limitations somehow(tm).
The plug-in charger I have is 2A and variable voltage. The garage where I am is only partially open, and would make solar way too inconsistent.
Would rather not have gauges and the clock reset by using a disconnect switch, but wouldn't we all. It's something to consider if prolonged episodes of entropy exist, but I'd probably rather drive it a bit more and charge it at a friend's twice a year.
Car is about due for an oil change, so I'll have them run battery health diagnostics while they're at it. Physically looks okay with no significant corrosion, though, so with it's young age I suspect it won't be an issue, but who knows.
