Howdy! I'm Jacob (or Cobb or cobbland, or Illuminated Snail if you're feeling fancy). I mostly write tabletop roleplaying games and adventures. I'm also working on a novel and write the occasional short story (mostly scifi). And I'm neck-deep in learning full-stack web development. I also enjoy watercolor painting, retro gaming, graphic design, sustainability, and stuff.

The fact that no one ever debates what the definition of a β€œman” is says it all about the recent UK Supreme Court judgement.

Transphobia is deeply rooted in misogyny.

It’s the idea that women should look a certain way, based on sexist ideas of female sexuality through the male gaze, and should act a certain way, based on a patriarchal belief system.

It’s the idea women are only good for procreation and satisfying men sexually.

That’s why we never hear about trans men.

you miss the fundamental point, the Jews just want you to recognise their right to exist and not kill them, then stopped chose to wear that stuff to be nun's, and you don't have to attack and murder your neighbour just because he or she believes in a different imaginary God. Learn to mind your own business!!

How old am I?

I'm so old I remember when Google search provided more value than surveillance advertising.

I'm so old I remember when an operating system was not considered an advertising platform.

I'm so old I remember when "Artificial Intelligence" was a serious enquiry filled with brilliant people, and not a scam machine populated by sleazebags.

I'm so old I remember when "user" didn't mean "product".

I'm so old I remember when "corporation" didn't mean "person".

I distinctly remember someone telling me about this "Wikipedia" thing and me thinking it was the stupidest idea I'd ever heard of - who's going to write stuff for a free encyclopedia? And who the hell is going to use it? How could it ever grow to be a significant size?

Yeah OK I was just a teensy bit wrong about that.

"This AI output is highly inaccurate."
"Nah, you're just prompting it wrong."
"How do I go about prompting it the right way?"
"You really need to know the subject you're asking about. Then you can help it avoid making mistakes."
"If I know the subject deeply myself, why am I asking an AI about it?"
"It helps to train the AI."

In my honest opinion, cities on the western side of Oregon, and maybe as far south as down to Salem, it's safer. Outside of that, and especially once you get closer to the side of the state where the eastern Oregon counties want to join "Greater Idaho"? Maybe not so much.

Also, if you do visit Portland, I recommend you stay out of Downtown. Especially Old Town and at night.

Open air drug markets. Fentanyl. We have ads on local radio telling people to carry naloxone nasal spray in case of accidental exposure on public transit.

@wolfinpdx include Eugene/Springfield in fairly liberal. College towns like Corvallis and La Grande lean liberal. Bend is neutral left.

Even as far south as Florence on the coast I have seen men turn away when some guy brings up his right leaning politics.

Any place where people live in cities people have some empathy. The angry men are people who stayed in dead end rural areas to survive off family property.

I am glad there are exceptions.

I always think in terms of personal risk. I have since 9/11.
I was in the streets during Dubya's administration. Old habits kicked in during Trump's first term.

Then the pandemic happened. I got sick and have been out of work. Maybe long COVID. Can't get a diagnosis. With Trump in office a second time, I am now surviving. I would be homeless without my partner.

We have friends who are at risk because of Republican politics. I worry for them. I would say if you don't need to come to the United States, just don't. Things are accelerating.

Find other ways to resist. Support those of us who are in hostile territory from outside our borders. It may be safer where you are. You can effect change from a position of greater freedom and strength.

@wolfinpdx I am in the same boat you are, only a little worse. I had COVID pneumonia and coughing for 4 months, lung pain for 9, and lasting damage that I took another year and a half to get over. I lost sensitivity to heat and cold, so my body didn't sweat enough, and I still get very cold below 73Β°F. My internal thermostat is burned out.

As of now I have burned through all my retirement, my savings, and I am trying to sell a small boat. I am 52, and with the gap nobody wants..

in reply to Urban Hermit

@wolfinpdx ...to higher me, for anything.

AND I live alone in an apartment, with no partner. I am 2 weeks and $1,000 away from being homeless. And the economic uncertainty this administration is projecting to businesses might be the deciding factor. And of course all aid for desperate people is being slashed.

This phone I bought 4 years ago and the annual plan I renewed 6 months ago while on a temp job is the only way I am communicating.

I am not in a position of strength.

I'm surprised about Virginia being in this picture. I would think the proximity to Washington DC would make it more conservative.

#PennedPossibilities 645. What was the most unexpected challenge you encountered while writing your WIP?

I didn't expect large parts of the Western world to fall to fascism while I was writing a series about the West falling to fascism, though, in retrospect, I should have seen that coming.

in reply to Rachel A. Rosen

@WarmasterPalak I think journaling separate from your writing can help organize your thoughts to disentangle plot from the bits that are sticking in your brain from reality.

My current story had a lot of elements that were too much to process at the start of Covid and it helped to find a way to focus on my story vs my life.

It's difficult when life is following plot in spooky ways because you don't want to feel like your story is swept up in the chaos of reality.

in reply to ClaraBlackInk

@clarablackink
Oh, my god, yes. Talking about the various plot points has helped put them in distinct perspective.

Hive mind: any suggestions?

On my Macbook Air, Safari has been behaving weirdly when I plug in my external monitor. Many (but not all?) of the Safari windows get rendered full-window (even though they weren't when I was only on the laptop, nor before I disconnected and reconnected).

I had suspected a bug with BetterSnapTool, which I was using, but I've deleted that and rebooted several times since.

I *think* this may have started happening at the last Mac OS update.

It's not terrible, just really really annoying. So far web searching hasn't yielded any hints. Any thoughts?

in reply to Denis 🌏

I'm using just one monitor on my Mac, but have also noticed that any window dragged to the edge of the screen automatically goes full screen. Super annoying! Fixed this under Settings > Desktop & Dock > Windows... UNselect the options Drag, Drag, Hold, and Tiled.

Ahhhh...

#Oregon people, what is the least bad cell network in your experience? I'm leaving my carrier soon and have a chance to pick a better one. I'm on VZ at the moment, but the coverage around my house is pretty terrible for the price. I might go AT&T, but then I see they're not that great either. T-Mobile is fast where it's got coverage, but it's by far the weakest for coverage outside the major metros. I spend most of my time in the Portland area, but I don't want to be without coverage when not.
in reply to Leschmaltz :cascadia:πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

There is a way to try T-Mobile on your device without switching all the way if you want to compare coverage to your existing carrier.
