Anyone have the manual for this Epson "2KIF" RS-232 (maybe current loop too?) serial interface board? It fits inside my Epson FX-100 wide carriage dot matrix printer as a secondary interface. I need to know what the DIP switches do. So far, I think SW2-1 through 4 are baud rate but the rest are a mystery.
@gloriouscow Hey thanks! I found that one too (Y49099103005) but I think it's a different model. My card (Y49020800000) SW1 only four bits while this card SW1 is 8 bits. The baud rate chart does match though. The rest don't seem to behave as that manual indicates.
I think@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space I think that's it! Also, I was wrong! The silkscreen for SW1 is ABOVE the 8-bit DIP. The one for SW2 was close to it but it referenced the 4-bit DIP. This will likely solve things. Thanks!!
oh man, mention of an Epson FX-100 brings back memories of reading the manual as a kid, and programming BASIC on my PCjr to print things in double strike. I will never forget the sound!

Manual was key: it explained the stop bits are automatically determined by baud rate. 9600 baud has 2 stop bits. All others have 1 stop bit. Explains the bizarre behavior! 🙃
The DIPs that worked for me at 9600 8N2: SW1 10001010 SW2 0101

Humans independently edit Wikipedia for humans. They don’t have any Ads or cannot be bullied into removing content. Wikipedia is free from AI slop. No wonder tech bros with AI companies want to eliminate it so that their fake AI text generator can show or push propaganda. Please do not let Wikipedia die. It is an independent source and far more reliable than Gen AI companies. It is a real shame that it comes to this.
it's even worse, a lot of those AI companies also try to scrape Wikipedia on such a massive scale that it literally causes them significant financial damages. No joke, more than 75% of their traffic, comes from companies trying to scrape their data.
I seriously wish there were grounds for wikimedia to sue these companies for trying to scrape their data in a harmful manner, but we'll essentially need them to upgrade their licensing first...
Short version is someone in Trump's DOJ sent them a letter threatening to take away their tax exempt status as a way of hurting them if they don't start censoring and changing entries to satisfy what this administration wants it to say.
This doesn't mean they're dying (or that the threat actually holds water) but it's a very very bad sign.

Odd request, but like there are tools for upscaling fuzzy images, anyone know of audio equivalents? So if I have a grungy 8-bit sample, making it sound better or actually resampling it? I guess if it has to make up the missing detail/frequencies it might glitch in an interesting way.
What is the most accessible way of taking a screenshot of a page in google chrome? I assume a keyboard shortcut? I need to send that screenshot via email so I have to know where what folder it is saved to.
@cachondo Accessible window framing. You use printscreen to open the wizard, and then you have a shortcut layer that allows you to taake a direct windows capture, or frame a set of screen coordinates. Think of it as accessible screen-snipping.
@jackf723 In theory, this sounds great. In practice, I've just spent 25 minutes trying to capture a screenshot of a dialog on a webpage without the backdrop, and getting nowhere.
The coordinates that it claims for objects often don't match what NVDA's developer info shows. Which is weird, because that's presumably where the add-on is getting them from.
So I tried copying those coordinates to the clipboard, intending to reference them in the wizard and set them manually. Except, it prevents me from reading my clipboard or switching to Notepad when the wizard is open—both NVDA+C and Alt+Tab just result in a beep.
What I'm going to try next is sending them to myself on WhatsApp, and setting the wizard while reading them on my phone. Totally reasonable user experience.
@jscholes @jackf723 I'd been using the old openai NVDA addon which lets you capture an object as the basis for some of my screenshots. This other sounds ... confusing.

Been a long 2 days here in #hazelwood . I took yesterday off, nice thing about being a gig driver, taking time off whenever I want, & since I met goal, I decided to focus on moving the pile to the back where the pool had been. Based on the reporting from FT today of right wing influence campaigns on X, I believe there is an attempt by foreign actors — possibly indirectly or directly connected to the Trump Administration — to manipulate the Canadian electorate.
Everything that happens on X is enabled by one person, Elon Musk, who occupies a key role in the Administration of the United States of America.
Here is the definition of Foreign Interference in the Act. It seems pretty clear to me that it applies.
“Foreign interference in the Canadian electoral process can pose a serious threat to our democracy. All allegations of wrongdoing on the part of a foreign person or entity are taken seriously and are carefully examined to determine whether they fall within the Commissioner's mandate.
• Undue influence by foreigners
**** Foreign persons or entities are prohibited from unduly influencing a Canadian elector to vote or refrain from voting, or to vote or refrain from voting for a particular candidate or registered party. *****

This is the section I quoted of the FT article that I believe is relevant and rises to foreign interference:
“The FT’s analysis, in collaboration with a team of researchers at the University of Southern California led by Luca Luceri, identified a network of suspicious accounts promoting rightwing memes and news sources collected from posts appearing for the queries: #cdnpoli, Canada, Mark Carney, Pierre Poilievre. Luceri said: “Our approach is deliberately cautious to reduce misclassification and minimise false positives — ensuring that organic accounts are not misclassified as malicious actors.””
The EU is introducing an energy label for phones, together with mandatory requirements for phones sold in the EU;
- 5 years of software updates (AFTER they stop selling the device in the EU)
- providing important hardware parts (during sale and for 7 years after), including free software (if needed), to every repair shop, within 5-10 business days
- batteries have to make 800 charging cycles and still be above 80% original capacity
And on top of that, phones and tablets need this energy label from 20 June 2025, which also includes a fall damage durability and repairability score.
There needs to be extensive testing to prove that the devices themselves matches the label ratings, and not just some label slapped on there claiming to be something they're not. Thankfully there are a lot of tech reviewers these days who do these kinds of proper tests that aren't just factory controlled tests.
Perhaps credit needs to also go to #Fairphone as they proved these could be done even by a tiny company with few resources. It showed that the excuses made by larger companies were untrue.
