I own the S3 bucket named "https". I don't know what to do with it, but it seems like it could cause lots of fun.
The direct URL to it would be: https.s3.amazonaws.com

tariffs, mass deportation β the pieces fit together
I think Iβve squared a circle. Doesnβt mean itβs real; just that Iβve found a way to square it.
Walk with me.
Letβs say youβre Trump and youβve promised mass deportations and huge tariffs on China and other countries.
Letβs say that mass deportation is incredibly expensive β maybe youβre aware that Hitlerβs camps and extermination programme were eating 13% of Nazi Germanyβs GDP in the middle of their wars of conquest.
Letβs say youβre also aware that this will take years and years and years, because thereβs literally no way to do this quickly. Physically, I mean. 15 million people canβt be thrown out overnight, or even over months. Itβll be years.
Letβs also say you want to keep inflation down, particularly to keep prices from skyrocketing due to your tariff policies. Tariffs are, I remind you, a tax an imports that get paid by the importer, and which are passed on to the customer. They are inflationary, by design. At least, until and unless they torpedo the economy entirely, at which point, well, youβve set off a second Great Depression, just like Smoot and Hawley.
Now, letβs say that itβs very important to you to keep wages down as well, because nobody wants to pay workers if they can avoid it. If you want to bring back a lot of manufacturing in an already-tight labour market, thatβs going to raise labour costs. It just is.
So you assign an amoral monster like Tom Homan β author of Trumpβs Family Separation policy β as the βczarβ of immigration. Heβs promising the largest deportation force in history and recently said his answer to preventing βfamily separationβ is to expel the entire family β citizenship be damned.
(Heβs also a contributor to Project 2025 and a visiting fellow at Heritage Foundation. Project 2025 absolutely is the agenda. All of it.)
Then you start talking to people youβre already very friendly with, the operators of private prisons. They are utterly ready and looking forward to the new policies. They see it as an opportunity to double β or better β the size of their evil industry in all its forms.
Your inner circle have already acknowledged youβll have to build camps β lots of them, big ones. Youβll call them βprisonsβ or βdetention facilitiesβ or βmilitary camps,β not βconcentration camps,β you certainly wonβt call them that. Letβs say βfacilities.β
Prison βfacilitiesβ are already well known for requiring prison labour, and for their pennies-per-hour payment to inmates. Private prisons have pushed the envelope on this in many ways; prison labour is a profit centre. One I was working against, before the fascist era.
So.
Imagine, if you would, the very easy jump.
Youβve got to do something with these hundreds of thousands of imprisoned people, donβt you.
Imagine expulsions taking months, then years. Years at a time. Perhaps they stop working so hard on speeding up the process. Perhaps they slow-walk it, timed to, say, suit the availability of βfacilityβ beds.
Of course youβll put them to work. A rotating cast of βfacilityβ workers β βprison workersβ β worked slowly through the system so thereβs no one there quite long enough to start organising.
Paid, technically. At pennies for the hour, as a token, a pretence that itβs not slavery. But, of course, it is. You recoup the pennies you have to pay by charging them for everything. Maybe even their bed.
And just like that you have highly profitable⦠North Korean-style labour camps, with entire families of workers imprisoned, for who knows how long while they are put to work as factory labour for the private prison companies which become the new internal outsourcers of zero-cost labour.
Slavery, though not by name.
Maybe youβll tie camp expansions to increases in tariffs. Raise them in parallel, timed so that the internal outsourcing absorbs the cost of the new tariffs. And then look β no price inflation, no wage inflation.
And whole new class of people to look down upon forever, if you like.
Itβs quite the plan. Very neat. Very clean. Given that Trump voters actively want βmilitary campsβ used against immigrants, itβll be a very easy sell.
And very, very profitable. Slave camps always have been, really.
And all you have to be is an abomination upon the earth.
And all your supporters have to do is let you be one.
Is that the plan? I donβt know.
All I know is that all the pieces seem to fit.

Well that's embarrassing...
Ummm, I broke the admin account over here on #friendica . I can proudly say I'm an idiot.
Why?
Well, my host agreed to put up the pack of Friendica themes that's out there, and I had the brilliant idea to try one of them... using the admin account. Firefox now loads a blank web page, and Chromium spits back a 500 error. Ummm, hopefully my host knows a way to fix this. In one way it's good, if they can restore that account to an hour ago, it'll fix it without changing anything appreciably, the only thing I've done over there other than the theme was turn off the Tumblr plug in since I couldn't get that to work.

So, weβve seen in the last couple of days calls for Biden to resign and let Kamala take over as 47 for the rest of his term. Weβve also seen calls for Justice Sotomayor to step down and allow Biden to name a replacement.
Hear me out: Harris has a law degree, right? So, Biden appoints her to the Supreme Court to replace Sotomayor. Harris casts the tiebreaking vote in the Senate to confirm her nomination. Then Biden steps down, making Harris the president for the remaining days of his term. She then has Trump and Vance arrested and sent to Gitmo, using her official immunity powers.
Canβt be any more far fetched than this timeline weβre living in now.

It took a NZ news site for me to find out what the mistake was, apparently they listed wicked.com which is kinda obviously porn, an obvious name that would've been snapped up during the early days of the internet.
Can anyone recommend small independent sources of information/news, either about tech, world facts, or both, that are in a similar ballpark as kottke and 404media, but they're not US-centric?
Anything interesting in Europe or elsewhere?

Please let me know if anyone knows any temporary housing or support in NYC for a trans woman who has just been outed to her family. She currently doesnβt have a safe place to go right now. She does amazing CSS stuff. She has unfortunately aged out of a lot of trans youth programs.
