So Fediverse, last week I was laid off by my employer, Elastic, as part of a wider reorg that made my position redundant. 7% of the global workforce was impacted, so I'm not alone in this 😢

I'm a backend engineer with strong #cloudinfrastructure , #devops and #observability skills. I have two projects in mind, a simple forms app for Android that isn't tied to Google. A new Fediverse project borrowing heavily from Friendica (a fork maybe?), but fixing what I see as its short comings.

So, switched computers, after breaking into Vik's Ace Magic Windows install to see if'n there was any important files on it (nada), I installed Mint DE 7 on it, and am now running it as my main computer. I was thinking that it wouldn't work out, it only has an N100 processor, but whereas the ThinkCentre with its AMD processor would frequently spin up the fans as it struggled when I ran videos, no such problem here. For such a tiny little computer, it runs good, really the only problem is the lack of ports… Or rather weird selection, one audio out, two Ethernet, three USB and three HDMI. Yeah, that's it, I'm using one of my hubs with it, which doesn't run as hot plugged into this computer, but that only gives me a total of five ports, I'd like more, anyone have a recommendation for a hub that has at least five ports and uses the old square USB? I do have an adapter if needed.
Any how, whereas the last computer was on the network as ThunkCentre, this one is AceAce Baby, because I don't do subtle.

Genuine question, even six months ago, I wouldn't've asked, I mean Diaspora is nice, I really like it, even if'n its not got AP connectivity, but with new things like Wafrn and Loops, especially Loops, it seems like the lack of AP connectivity means being left behind and losing out these days.
We all probably have our own reasons. But by elimination diaspora works for me. The Meta world is totally unacceptable to me because the owner has no morals. There are probably some appealing discussion groups there, but i'll never login again.
Microblogging, Mastodon and Bluesky, just are too choppy, too many snippets out of context to spend much time with. Xitter, ha, what a dumpster fire. Tumblr, eh, not for me. What's left? I don't know about Wafrn and loops.

As to Tumblr, I kinda like it, but you definitely need to find the right group, which prolly took me something like 5 years, but its been long enough that I don't remember."
Yes but then the backlog builds up so fast that there's no point trawling though it. There's a certain frequency of posting beyond which it's impossible to keep up.
@Khurram Wadee Oh that is so very, very true, I'm at the point where I have personal rules for how much of the timelines I look at, and I don't sweat missing stuff, its not like in real life that I can keep up with everything happening, no reason online should be different, for those things are important, I'll put them on a list, or chase them down individually, the rest, I see what I see.
@Andrew Pam Interesting, what's that running? I use this place as a blog, but haven't decided on its future as I have a love-hate relationship with #friendica , on one hand it has post scheduling and is AP and Diaspora compatible, unlimited length posts and inline images, on the other hand, the design is god awful, settings are a complete mess, and the interface is really cluttered.
Just a lazy day here, went to sleep too late, in fact fell asleep playing games on my tablet, work had run long, and my usual web surfing ran longer than normal, so this means I didn't get enough sleep, nor was it particularly good. Oh well, first day of my weekend, I'll make it up when I get to it, only need to grocery shop, mow the lawn, do the laundry and accounting. That last one I think I screwed up on last weekend, so overdue bills and stuff likely await.
So far today we've gone out for breakfast, since I didn't have any rice prepared, and didn't have any potatoes for a substitute side. Not like its the only thing I've run out of, somehow massively miscalculated things, so I ran short on lunch ingredients yesterday. Either way, grabbed breakfast, took care of groceries, then had fun filling tiny libraries in St Charles on the way home, 8 or so libraries, went through two dozen books.
Might nap, prolly have a pizza for a late dinner (sticking to traditional meal names/times here), might get laundry done. Stuff can just as easily wait until tomorrow, though I do have chiro in the morning. Might get some beads and rubber bands too, also might go buy a small used TV here, basically want something near the second desk for plugging in computers I'm tinkering with that I can also plug the stereo into, and if'n it has enough HDMI ports, use as a third monitor here.
Got the coffee maker I ordered, and its… Meh. For those didn't see the post, I got a single serve coffee maker that isn't a Keurig. It can use Keurig pods, and technically reusable pods, though they fit as badly here as they do with a standard Keurig, but it also includes a reusable single serve filter. Quality is cheap, brand is non-existent, very reminiscent of a coffee maker you'd get in a hotel room, has auto shut off, but no brew limit, so you only want to put one cup of water in the tank at a time. Mom got me a new Keurig for my whelpday which I'm not sure what I'm going to do with, I mean the old one still works although it doesn't always close fully and sometimes stops brewing early, and the new one works even if'n its cheap (with coupon it only cost $22, what do you expect?), so I don't need a new Keurig… yet.
Oh, need to fully set up the newish computer, one of Vik's that I'm getting set up to use, gotta clean out Firefox before I connect it to my account so it doesn't cause chaos on my existing computers. Also prolly need to update it at this point. Guess I'll do that after updating this one, as it has kernel updates, so a reboot is required, so we might just leave it powered down, or we might reboot it. I suppose I do need to start cleaning out the computer here, right now I have two POS terminals, an iMac that I need to finish upgrades on, three Lenovo Thinkcentre thin clients, Vik's Macbook, and his Mac mini… I think that's all of them, and there's just one of me, so I should clean the collection out. Oh, and that's just the computers, there's an iPad or two, three Lenovo tablets, and iPhone or two, and lord knows how many Android phones here. If anyone needs some tech, let me know, if you need a new phone and are broke, there's a chance I can help with a chap (sub $100) replacement.

Of course Trump and his whole regime will try to discredit them. But it’s too late I guess. More and more people are waking up. So this is another nail in the coffin of the Trump regime.
The scientists behind the new independent organization Climate.us are the same experts Trump fired because they were researching and reporting on climate change.
Formerly NOAA’s Climate.gov, they didn’t disappear. They rebuilt.
Now they’re independent and preserving climate data, outside of political interference, with public support and a team of volunteer scientists.
