Playing with Hubzilla
Gotta say, I'm not even quite sure how to describe it, but it is interesting, its based on Friendica, sort of, same developer, later project, many of the same parts as they are kinda modules that can be used to build a Fedi application.
So, what do I think of Zotum?
Well, uptime is kinda crap, the account is less than 6 hours, and I've already had multiple problems reaching the server, plus problems getting searches to resolve, rather than just hanging there.
Hubzilla?
Interesting, complicated, it can be many things, even more than #friendica , heck even a web site. No, really, take a look at hubzilla.org/ , that's a Hubzilla serving as a web page. Community page, blog, microblog, web page, gallery I guess, I mean a lot. Even the most basic functions like Activity Pub and Diaspora sharing are apps that must be installed, and then activated, which is kind of a strange way to do things.
Adding friends is also a bit odd, I'm used to Wafrn's easy way, just search for the user, it'll pull up posts by them, mentioning them, their profile page, etc, and you can click on follow there if'n you want to follow them. Hubzilla? Go to connections, ignore the search box there, click on add, put the user into the search that pops up there. This seems harder than it needs to be.
Then there's post problems, though these I think are a side effect of the front end, Devils Panties, a comic whose RSS feed I follow? Most of the posts show up as just a link on my timeline. Share a web site to my timeline? Just a link, no displayed preview, however I can see the post complete with a preview, so that's definitely the front end
Its interesting as I said, and it may even replace this place, especially if'n I can find a host that'll do custom themes, there are definitely some interesting options out there: github.com/saiwal/Utsukta-hub-β¦ Honestly those themes give a good look at the flexibility of Hubzilla.

Can't win with the Fediverse, can I?
If'n I disappear, its because bark.wolp is down again, again for 12+ hours with no news any where, while at the same time, @GoFedi who hosts this blog has been sending me emails letting me know I'm running out of space here, but there's been no response here to my questions, so I guess this blog has a limited lifetime.
Really not sure what I'm going to do, I like the features of Friendica, though it lacks a few I'd like, but I really don't like the interface, nothing a good alternate front end wouldn't fix, but nothing like that exists. And hosted instances are basically non-existant, GoFedi is the replacement for my previous host, the only straightforward host I've found. #gotosocial isn't quite ready yet, it lacks some features that I expect, particularly the ability to provide a synopsis for links, plus like the rest of the Fediverse outside of #friendica , it lacks some features I want. I won't quit the Fediverse, but depending on what happens and when, I may disappear for an extended period until I have time to figure out what I want to do.

Or something like that. What's going on online and offline...
First, welcome aboard all new followers here, though I do recommend you follow @Chuff instead as that's the main place I post if'n you really want to see what's occupying the echo chamber between my ears.
Speaking of #wafrn , anyone know of anyone providing hosted instances? Some time in the future I expect to replace this blog with a personal Wafrn. Kinda a big deal as #friendica has been my primary #Fediverse software for years, whether on someone else's instance or my own.
Life, there's not much to talk about, work, kill time, work, that's about it. Every now and then the fact that I'm growing old slaps me in the face, like last Sunday. At around 0300, I got up to use the bathroom, checked my apps and found Amazon was throwing money around. Well Ok, guess I'm working, day 6, leaving the house at 0330, few hours of work, then home, nap and errands, perfect. Grabbed second breakfast on my way home, and found I couldn't nap. That took a few days to recover from. That on top of my main gig burying me in work. Yay.
Valentine's Day came and went, me and Vik never really did much for it, so was just another day for me. Wrapping up the process of moving my investments that I inherited, the whole process will likely take to around the end of the year, only because the courts will have to be involved in some of that due to the lack of a will or TOD. Also getting my taxes done, same company, that took a while, joint return, and couldn't find Vik's 2024 so that might complicate things a touch.
Got a flea market coming up, I'm actually prepaid for tables at Sunset Hills flea market at their community center for Mar, Apr and May. Still have to sell stuff here, running into problems on that front, each time I think the comics are sold, it falls through, and books should be a fairly easy matter. Once those are gone along with giving his mom's stuff to his family, this place will be mostly cleared out, so once legal matters are done we can downsize.
Speaking of downsizing, I think I know where I'm going to wind up, prolly somewhere around IllFallon... I mean O'Fallon, IL. Not real far from here, and certainly not really closer to my family, but I have to say I like that area. That's where I was delivering for Amazon, at O'dark 30, and gotta say, despite not being able to see things and mostly running in and out of suburbs, I gotta say I like it over there. I think somewhere over there or a little bit east, between I64 and I70 will likely be where I wind up. It feels comfortable, if feels like somewhere I could easily move in and just feel right. I've actually seen a property I like in Edwardsville on Marketplace, but that one would be best if'n my family would want to join me. Its not a large property, but its kinda triangular with one corner and the address in a cul-de-sac, and one side on another street. Could buy it chop it up and have street facing for three houses. But, the property has been on Marketplace for a while, so its either a zombie ad, something is wrong with the property, or its a scam. Oh well, obviously time will tell, but we'll see.
March of the Covers is going on, just like this time last year, however this one is happening over on my Wafrn, just look for the hashtag #March-of-the-Covers or follow Chuff. Posts may get occasionally boosted over here. And as always we're building a playlist over on YouTube.
Pictures of me from the WebCam always look so far away, maybe if'n I move it to the shelf over there...
Nah, only improvement is that the camera isn't looking down at me. Oh well, at least y'all can see that I'm bald again, I did that for the new month after not cutting for 2+ months.
Any other news... Well, I'm recovering. Anyone with sense knows that eating at Jack In the Box is risky, but the food is so good... In a junky guaranteed bad for you way, which is why I grabbed breakfast for dinner last night on the way home. Considering how much of a fiasco things were at that store, my order took over 10 minutes to be made, I prolly should've expected this morning, but... Oh well, spent way too much time in the bathroom, limped off to work for a nice light day, then came home napped for an hour or so.
So, that's really everything going on in my #life , what about y'all?

Y'all might've noticed a drop in posts
Starting today I'm using my Wafrn more, but it won't completely replace this place. At the very least, this will still be my blog, at least unless I find a better platform for that. Oh, and following pod people (Disapora users), at least until they move to something ActivityPub. And RSS feeds.
So, what does Wafrn lack that Friendica has?
Categories, useful as I can share links to just part of my blog here
Diaspora compatibility
Feed reader, this is one of the neatest features here, they show up in your timeline just like anyone else you follow
Hashtag auto complete/suggestion, kinda useful so we don't wind up with a thousand variations on the same thing
Link display in post creation window, if you paste a link into the creation box on Friendica or Mastodon, it displays the summary so you can see what the post will look like, Wafrn, you have to wait until your post is on your dashboard
No following or followers list
What's it missing that I want?
Queue function like Tumblr, something that Friendica has made clear they see no point in
An easy way to share internet links. This one isn't on Wafrn, for Friendica and Mastodon I use an extension on Firefox, I think this is a fork, of the older FediShare extension, and this one I don't think is supported as it seems to be a bit out of date on what services it supports. It'd be nice to see someone take over it and maintain it as its useful for sharing things.
Other bugs/glitches?
Relatively minor stuff, tried to upload a video that was possibly too big and got no error, just no video attached to the post.
If you search for someone then follow them, the page doesn't refresh the button status, the follow button doesn't become an unfollow, rather it stays a follow button
Seriously, that's a long list of nitpicks really, and like stuff @gabboman the wafrn dev will likely fix as time goes on since Wafrn is young, and none are a deal breaker. I'll prolly switch to hosted Wafrn instant at some point in the future, just have to figure out costs and what I want to do with this place.

we need to do soo many things, we have a big list.
Regarding following rss, i think bridgy had something that allowed you to follow RSS.
I could try doing something about it but ΒͺΒͺΒͺΒͺΒͺΒͺΒͺΒͺ another thing to factor in
@gabboman the wafrn dev I can imagine, not even to a full version yet, right? I figured none of that stuff has any chance of happening any time soon, but hey, a pup can wish, right? And the Fedishare extension thing is kinda unrelated, though it does annoy me that that extension isn't maintained considering how little maintenance it'd need.
Not sure if'n it'd help with either the Diaspora or the RSS feed thing, but IIRC, the original developer of Friendica created a library of modules to be used in Fediverse apps on GitHub, SocialHome and one other use some of the bits.
As to the list, I think it depends on goals, want to stand out, consider the queue function, prolly fairly easy thing to add, and useful as its main purpose is flood control.
Bring it up to Mastodon/et al features, add some manner of follower/followers management and/or fix the hashtag thing.
Want to kill Diaspora? Add compatibility.
Really this is a wish list, and if'n any of it happens, cool, if not, oh well, just impacts what will be my main Fediverse app
Need to fix my timeline here
#friendica #Friendica Support @Fedi.Tips
Is there a way to set up a timeline that shows everything except one contact I'm following?
I use altbot to generate alt text for my images, but that requires me to follow it so it can reply to my posts with the alt text, problem is that means my timeline is now flooded with every post it replies to, so I need a way to filter that out so I only see altbot replies to my own posts.
Thanks

It sounds like the kind of thing an add-on could do?
Is there such a thing as a good browser?
Found out that Waterfox plays nice with both Hitomi, and FimFiction, so decided to give it a shot as my main browser. FimFiction doesn't work well on FireFox but does on Chromium, while Hitomi doesn't work on either of those. Later I found out that WaterFox handles AliExpress fine too, a site that works on Chromium, but not FireFox.
Looks-wise, no different than Firefox, has a tab sidebar, but that's about all that's better. Oh, and it was giving a pop up about security settings with a link to click to get more info, official WaterFox and all, and the link was a 404. Yeah, that's real encouraging. After a bit I logged into my FireFox ID so I could gather all my add ons there, and see if'n they broke any of those sites, but they kept working. What didn't stay working was the browser itself, there was a blink, and most of my tabs disappeared. Oh, and GoComics oddly doesn't work with it, if you try to enlarge a pic, you just get a blank page.
Ok, so it's not going to work out, fired up Firefox... And now I'm missing my containers and one of my home page sites. Quit, went back to WF and logged it out of my Mozilla ID, quit and opened FireFox, and got most of my stuff back. Lots of logging in and a few settings later, and we've got almost everything, I've lost access to my Recalls group here.
The Recalls problem is partially my fault, BitWarden never saved the password, and I'd deleted the account email address, replacing it with a new account. Solution seems pretty simple, right? Just create that address again... And for some reason the Friendica password reset isn't making it to that address... Oh joy.
Any how, so I'm back to using FireFox for most things, and Chromium for a few others. Might keep WaterFox for Hitomi, dunno on that. Now to figure out something with @Recalls
New accounts
We've started both a Mastodon and a Diaspora, mostly for crosspost testing, and having a backup for contacting @#SpaceHost Help should this instance go down.
That said, as the newest toot on @Taurnsndhaus Admin says, I'll be using that one for St Louis related toots, maybe unique to there, maybe boosting stuff from here. No political stuff unless its really funny, or #STL related. We'll also be posting any STL or #missouri based recalls there as well.
@Taursndhaus Admin 's use is uncertain at this time, testing purposes definitely, beyond that, unsure. I might post (toot?) my Tumblr favorites over there too, that's what pushed me to set up these accounts, I my send them there and re-share them here, we'll see. Beyond that, I'm not sure how I'm going to use that. Heck, I set that one up as my old #diaspora on rageoss vanished, actually the whole pod seems to have. Activity on that one is obviously uncertain as Diaspora's lack of #ActivityPub limits the reach, if it had that, I'd prolly be running Diaspora instead of #friendica
So what started all of this?
It was brought to my attention that although my Tumblr posts were showing up fine on my end, albeit with some work as some posts wouldn't show a thumbnail or a link from the blog I found the post on, requiring me to find a re-share that would work, there were problems with sharing those posts. Mastodon shows nothing but a link, but that's the same whether its coming from here or directly from Tumblr; Diaspora however could show them fine when direct posted there, but when crossposted from here, all they see is a link. Clearly Tumblr is somehow breaking sharing from here as regular news articles, boosts, and any original posts here share fine, but none of Tumblr's posts do. Somehow I'm not surprised, I mean Tumblr offers an RSS feed, and I can follow feeds here just like I do any member of the #Fediverse , but their feeds are flaky at best, sometimes they won't work at all, giving me no way to follow them, other times posts lag and/or show up in clumps.
But any how, there's the whats and whys of where else I can be found.
Minor blogs problem
Seeing this across all the accounts here, new followers no longer show up in the notifications on my browser.
I don't think I've changed any settings, so is this new?
Is there somewhere I can look to make sure I didn't accidentally change something either at the user or admin level?
I do know that it shows up on #Fedilab on my devices.
I wish we had a Tumblr equivalent here
Seriously, I think Tumblr is my favorite social media, though that shouldn't be a surprise with how many Tumblr postings I share here, right? Not really sure why, though I will say I've been there over 13 years, and have cultivated a wonderful and diverse collection of accounts to follow. Tumblr is weird and impossible to monetize, and I love weird.
I don't get why we don't have an equivalent here, when people keep coming up with forks of Mastodon/Misskey/etc or creating new similar services, it's not like they'd have to build it from scratch. Seriously, #friendica has everything you need an more except for the look, the current interface ain't real great, and it sure don't look like Tumblr, so prolly a fork would be good. Sure, you could change the look through a theme, it does support that, but I think forking it and hacking off unnecessary parts would help, or at least re-writing some of the ugly parts, the settings for example are wonderful for the options they have, but a nightmare to find anything in. Image upload procedure is clunky, though you can drag and drop images into your posts, and more complicated than it needs to be.
Seriously, it can display images as well as Tumblr can, text posts better, communicates with the entirety of the Fediverse (handles AP & Diaspora), adds an RSS feed reader and the ability to treat them like any other contact here, has quote boosting (including those RSS feeds), is there anything better? Ok, it doesn't allow uploading of movie files, or at least I haven't figured out how yet. Oh, and BB Code allows you to do inline images and other neat stuff, it supports the vast majority of BB Code, so you can do a lot of neat things in posts.
Anyone up for adding to the Fediverse?

Ok, y'all go play
Yes, seriously, I'm inviting y'all to help me test testes@blog.taursnd.haus It's a #friendica group that's being tested before I create a new version of @Taurnation .
So, feel free to follow for the few days it will be up, posts can be shared there by mentioning them, then the posts will be automagically boosted there. If you throw something up there, CW where appropriate.
Well that's embarrassing...
Ummm, I broke the admin account over here on #friendica . I can proudly say I'm an idiot.
Why?
Well, my host agreed to put up the pack of Friendica themes that's out there, and I had the brilliant idea to try one of them... using the admin account. Firefox now loads a blank web page, and Chromium spits back a 500 error. Ummm, hopefully my host knows a way to fix this. In one way it's good, if they can restore that account to an hour ago, it'll fix it without changing anything appreciably, the only thing I've done over there other than the theme was turn off the Tumblr plug in since I couldn't get that to work.

in reply to π΄ Seph π πΎ • • •@π΄ Seph π πΎ Have you taken a look at Hubzilla yet?
It was created by the same guy as Friendica, and it's a descendent of Friendica. (Forked to Free-Friendika, then forked to Red, both in 2011, then largely rewritten against a brand-new protocol in 2012, then renamed Red Matrix, then greatly expanded in features and renamed Hubzilla in 2015.)
One could say it's Friendica
It does not provide any previews for links, though I'm sure something like this can be developed as a third-party addon.
If you want to try it, it's quite tricky to find a good hub with 3rd-party themes installed to start on. There aren't any in North America; don't go looking for them.
You may want to get in touch with @pepe about joining his Whoville hub. It's well-equipped, it's well-maintained, but keep in mind it's in Europe.
If you find Hubzilla to your liking, and you want to have your own hub hosted, there appear to be quite a few Hubzilla hosting services. Pick one you like, set up your own hub, activate the add-ons you need, install the third-party themes and add-ons you need, get it to run properly, and then clone your daily-driver production channel over from Whoville. Make the instance on your own hub the main one, and keep the one at Whoville as a clone in case your hoster is offline, or something else is wrong with your hub.

in reply to π΄ Seph π πΎ • • •@π΄ Seph π πΎ That's one nice thing about Hubzilla: You can customise the UI apart from theming. You can completely change the layout. (Not sure if you can do that with Saiwal's themes, but you can with Redbasic.)
By default, a new channel has barely got any icons in the navbar and not even that many in the app menu. The right-hand end of the navbar of a new channel only contains icons for search, HQ, help and the app menu. You can configure under Apps which icons shall appear where. Star them, and they're in the menu. Pin them, and they're on the navbar.
In fact, whereas (I think) Friendica has all its features on all the time, Hubzilla is very modular. Many of its features are optional and off by default; they're called "apps". If you don't need it, don't activate it, and you won't have UI elements for it.
Even the various pages can be rearranged in the PDL editor. You don't need something, throw it out. You only need one sidebar, choose a layout with only one sidebar instead of both. You can do without any sidebars, pick a layout without sidebars.
Saiwal's theme previews have to show what can be done with them. Hence, a lot of UI elements are in place that either can be configured away or have to be configured into place in the first place.
For example, if you look at the AdminLTE preview: You only have to pin the apps that you need all the time. If you want to, you can unpin them all, and they're gone. But then you'll have to go via the Featured Apps menu to get to them. You can slim that down as well, but then you have to open the Apps page to get to them.
The entire wide dark navigation bar on the left can be folded in if you don't need it. Fold it out when you need it.
Main Navigation looks like a homebrew element that doesn't necessarily have to be default. The Archives field can be configured away or has to be configured into place.
The buttons below the posts can't be reduced that much. The speech bubble unfolds the comments. Then come thumb up and (optional, off-by-default) thumb down. Next comes repeat (= share on Friendica). The smiley is for replying with nothing but one emoticon; I think this is actually an optional feature, too.
Now, when I look at the Solidified preview: Almost every other button on the left-hand bar is for an app that isn't even activated by default. Most of the rest are for features that are available right away, but their buttons usually aren't.
Most of what's on the right was probably configured in for the showcase. Even if it's there by default, it can be removed.
The centre only seems cluttered because the posts are arranged across three columns instead of all in one. Even there you can choose how to arrange the posts.
