If you're lonely or isolated or finding the Christmas period difficult for any reason, you might want to follow the hashtag #JoinIn and follow the group !@joinin

These are intended for people to start friendly chats about everyday stuff they're doing like making food, going for walks, listening to music etc.

It's fine to reply to posts with the JoinIn tag or in the JoinIn group, as the person who made the post is actively seeking conversation πŸ™‚

I've messaged the fedigroups admin to ask about the group's status. Sometimes FediGroup profiles appear to be empty even when they are active because their founder chose the private option.

About the hashtag vs group, you can use both. They aren't competitors, they are just two ways of reaching people which can be used simultaneously. They federate in different ways which is why it's useful to use both.

@Badgardener I spend Christmas alone just about every year these days and I don't mind it at all. It's just another day.

One year I did start following the #joinin tag. Unfortunately, I had to stop following it because it was dragging me down with depressing posts and even some pleas for financial assistance.

Yes, I'll get into a conversation with you and maybe we can even build a friendship, but I won't do it if you're dripping with self pity. I'm not a shrink. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

@photom @Badgardener I just wish that more people were as satisfied (or even happy!) about going solo as I am. After being in a mentally abusive and definitely boring relationship for many, many years I'm thrilled to be able to have total control of my life. And I don't experience loneliness because I keep myself very busy doing the things I want to do. #JoinIn

@mlanger @photom @Badgardener
I've found being alone most of the time is necessary because that is the only time I feel I can do want I want instead of catering to other peoples' needs or desires.

Especially because I really really suck at figuring out what people want.

@cptbutton @photom @Badgardener I'm with you 100%. Sometimes it seems to me that people are playing games, trying to be something they're not, trying to make you guess what it is that you can do to satisfy them. I'm so tired of playing games.

@punishmenthurts @Badgardener Oh, so you're saying it's a mutual pity party?

And here I was, naively assuming that a positive attitude is what some folks needed. Silly me. πŸ™„

Thanks for the tip. Party on. #JoinIn

p.s. The group can be used by anyone who fancies a chat about everyday things. It's not just for people who are isolated πŸ™‚

p.p.s. You don't have to decide between the group or the tag, you can use both in the same post. They federate in different ways so it helps you reach more people if you use both.

Thanks for keeping it alive.

I think it's important to acknowledge that it was started by comedian Sarah Millican, who started it on Twitter back in the day (I think she did eventually step back from it in 2023).

Have you already thought about basing your mastodon instance on glitch-doc extension? You often reach 500+ characters in your great posts. How nice would it be not to have this broken down messages in threads.
