It's kinda weird to see Telegram become enshittified. I guess I should've seen it coming because that's just the way it goes with our tech. I can't completely turn off the in app browser (even though it still pumps things through the default browser, it seems), a setting needs to be toggled away from the default so that Telegram respects Windows' DND, there's a paid subscription model, and I'm seeing more and more ads pop up in group chats and channels.
Pulling control away from the user and milking profits are telltale signs of what's to come, if my experience has taught me anything.
Now I wonder how long it'll take for furries to migrate over to Signal. We've all been through this process so many times and it never gets easier β group relocation is a pain in the ass.
An old teacher of mine once said to "never get married to your tech." The funny thing is, I'm not sure he even realized how accurate he was at the time. XD

Exactly when did I give them permission to do that?

There is one fatal flaw I have with Signal: I cannot create an account.
Last time I checked Signal only allowed a single account per phone and I need a private one that's not furry. I do have a second phone number I'm using for Telegram, but that's not an option with Signal.

Yeah, it really does. But even then, Signal is still just another centrally owned service. It might be better now, but there's no way to stop them from doing any of the stuff Telegram is doing now in the future.
I think a self-hostable solution with an open federation protocol would be the best way to prevent the inevitable corporate enshittification in the future.

Yeah, it's just such a dumb decision not to allow the use of multiple accounts. But I feel like Signal has done a lot of those in the name of security.
It's nice that they actually care about their security, but the choice between a secure app I can't use and an insecure one I can is not a choice at all.
I just wish there was a good (and accepted) solution to self-host your own and use federation.

@Stellae Yeah. The illusion of choice, for sure. I have had a few reasons that I cut down use of Telegram some months ago (some reasons personal, some related to security/privacy). The direction that Durov/Telegram was going was made very clear then. The AI stuff contunues to drive me away from alot of services and social spaces online.
Signal is what is touted as secure among any other alternatives that have been mentioned in these discussions.

I know if I could just "get over it" about my concerns (re: the phone number requirement and re: The USA hosting) I could just sign up to Signal.

Yeah, the enshittification of Software has been going at an incredible rate lately and AI has just accelerated it.
I fear that the perfect messenger will be just a dream that can never be realized. Matrix has a lot of the right ideas, but it also shows very well how difficult it actually is to make a good federated messenger that's open, secure, resilient, ...

I know what you mean, but I don't see a new messenger (or any service for that matter) pulling in the required amount of users for it to be viable.
Even if you would just ignore your concerns and created an account, there's not much you could do unless most/all your friends are using it as well. And if Twitter/X showed us anything, it's how hard it is to get users to move from a platform that's getting rapidly more hostile towards them.

@Stellae Thats partly why I havent felt moved to focus on any current things going on with social media. Long ago, I saw the things you mention here
People cant (?wont?) move so it probably more of a reason why I habent thpight about this stuff much, save for this convo thread.
