Huh, we'll see if'n anything comes of this, Trump does have a habit of saying non-vetted things, but...

President Donald Trump Has Apparently Given Kei Cars the Green Light for the U.S.A.
President Donald Trump saw kei cars on a recent visit to Asia. Now he wants them in the States. An adjustment to US regulations will allow just that.Lucas Bell (Yahoo)

That is if they have mufflers, and aren't being driven by a-holes.

Motorcyclists/bicyclists/pedestrians are much safer on Japanese roads. I've lost 2 friends on motorcycles in US (neither at fault), so IDK how much the point gets you.
Also not sure about crash safety standards there, but US cars and trucks are larger, heavier, & move much faster. Also, I keep thinking about visibility issues with lower-riding cars

As to crash standards, I doubt the older ones are particularly good, the vans and pickups have little more than a piece of sheet metal between you and what you hit, though the newer ones are getting a small (very) crumple zone, and I think ABS now.

I have concerns about safety of kei cars in a US context, but I also donβt drive any of those other vehicles in the US. So Iβm not sure what Iβm supposed to do with your argument, besides nod and agree that those other vehicles also have safety concerns in a US context.
