I honestly wish I didn’t know as much as I do about data collection and the misuse of our personal data. I’m far from knowing it all and even that is horrible enough that I wish I didn’t know it.

I’m convinced the only way we function as a society right now is because the vast majority of people don’t have a clue what’s going on, and if I could go back to that at this point it might be the only thing to give me peace.

We live in a world where data collection and electronic surveillance are a plague, we’re all infected, and it’s only going to get worse. Where’s J with a neurolizer when I need him.

Blink it all away, I don’t want it anymore. I want the sweet ignorance of not knowing.

@Xoa Gray I'd like to see us go back to the old web before all of this crap. Why not? Just start building web sites the old way, start our own protocol like Gemini, Gopher, etc if need be.

@vextaur I've honestly started spending a lot more time on Gemini and Gopher lately. And am working on learning how to make a place for myself there.

@Xoa Gray My only issue with those are they're all basically text based, right? I'd like to go back to the old web with its images and all, but still small lightweight and simple. Hmm, maybe a protocol based on BB Code? That'd be interesting especially considering what BB Code is.

@vextaur You can have images, but not like what's on the web now. One of the places I hang out is actually a forum that has photos.
I'm kind of okay with it being really simple, It's not flashy or attention grabbing. This keeps shitty companies from wanting to come in and smear themselves all over it.

That isn't to say this is a very important thing that needs fixed. But I've been doing this for around 10 years, and honestly for my mental health I need to step away.

yeah it's absolutely overwhelming sometimes. i used to be more privacy conscious like using different throwaway emails for different accounts and such. it used to make me so anxious, but i've laxed on that quite a bit over the last few years.

@athousandcateaus The thing is most of this stuff should be patently illegal. And a lot of it is in places like the EU. But it will never be in the US.
