Wafrn has rules against transphobia. And the no jkr positive talk on the main instance is how we do it

Fascism is when you receive a moderation warning on a microblogging website for posting about Bigotry the Magic Book Series

"wafrn warned me for breaking the rules that were already there before i posted"
in reply to sunny dazed!

Is what the mod team said.

My opinion is that I rather just shame on harry potter, its enough

in reply to gabboman the wafrn dev

i feel like the anti harry potter rule is completely reasonable tbh. continue to stand your ground, i might not be on flagship aside from my alt but i think you're fighting the good fight
in reply to sunny dazed!

I made that rule and people who has complained about it:
Someone who said ā€œantisionism is antisemitism and we should bomb gaza moreā€, people with a history of harassing trans people, and someone who also complained about the lolicon rule
in reply to rzeta0

so JK can write what she wants

and we don't have to buy her books

but admins censoring voices is wrong

in reply to rzeta0

it is a rule one agrees to before joining the instance.
if someone doesn't agree with it, there are many instances that do not have this rule and they can freely choose one.
no one is being censored, they are being warned because they broke one of the rules of the instance they chose to join.

Tbh, it still takes a little trouble understanding what the right approach is. I was never a Harry Potter fan so in this case, I don't care, but if this happened, let's say, with Doctor Who, honestly, I wouldn't know what to do. Is my favorite show in universe

If someone told me to stop seeing Doctor Who, it would probably be impossible for me, absolutely.

But, anyway, fuck JK, and that post looks like AI so, deserved :neofox_heart:

I did like Harry Potter when i was a child. And I understood what it is so i do what I can
in reply to nube :neofox_owo:

@nube :neofox_owo: @gabboman the wafrn dev Me personally I don't worry so much about the material as keeping Rowling from getting anything out of it, without sales numbers, without money, she wouldn't have a platform, so nothing wrong per se with enjoying Harry Potter, so long as you do it in a way that she doesn't benefit from, and especially good if'n you do it in a way that fixes issues with the stories.
in reply to gabboman the wafrn dev

@gabboman the wafrn dev @nube :neofox_owo: True, but she still needs money, and she only gets that from new sales and streaming, at least in the US, so support fan fics, buy used and don't stream, especially don't stream the new series. This series and her name certainly won't go anywhere for a long long time, though cutting off the money will speed up the process of her fading away.

Hey let's go with this for a second.

JKR has two houses, one in Perthshire and one in Edinburgh, from what I can find (2020): dailymail.com/news/article-807…

Let's assume she's not living alone. Cost of living, monthly, for a family of 4, in Edinburgh: $4,163.90 USD (Ā£3,124.20) numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/E… so yearly Ā£37,490.40 ($49,966.8 USD)

"Pottermore Limited," her company, made a pre-tax profit of Ā£17.2M per this article from Dec 2025: deadline.com/2025/12/harry-pot… (also confirmed by financial filings here: find-and-update.company-inform… )

After tax, that was £12,872,000 ($17,147,854.00 USD) per the same filing. Total revenue (this is where her money gets taken out of, not out of the profit) £54.3M ($72.3M USD)

On page 24 of the filing, where it says "the company is controlled by J.K. Rowling," the "amount due to individuals with control of the company" was listed as £22,196,000 ($29.5M USD)

And let's assume, even though this isn't true, that this is her only income. (She supposedly receives anywhere from 50-100M GBP each year from diverse streams newsweek.com/jk-rowling-making… )

If she quit working right now and lived only on 2025's income from one of these payouts from one company, making no other investments or changes, she would live at cost-of-living for 592 years.

When we talk about boycotting JKR, when we talk about removing her cultural relevance, no one is talking about removing her source of subsistence. That ship has sailed. She has enough for her, her children, her children's children, and probably her children's children's children to live comfortably for decades. But she isn't using that money to support herself or anyone else, and acting like she is using it for that purpose is playing into her public wing-dragging about how she wrote HP as a poor single mother trying to make ends meet.

When we make fanworks, when we promote fanworks, when we buy used, when we perpetuate her work in the common parlance, we are solidifying her cultural relevance, such that other people - not you, who already knows the series and carries that with you, but those who have not yet read it - will go out and read it, because they have to, to partake in that common culture.*

Whatever her reality used to be, it isn't that anymore, she's literally fine, but she does have a lot of money to throw around to harm people in massive ways using the UK's legal system as a cudgel.

This is not a woman who is worried about her livelihood: lbc.co.uk/article/jk-rowling-c…

*I also want to take a moment to highlight that JKR's transphobia is not the first sign that she was a bad person, or that her books were rotten. They are riddled with racism and acting like they aren't does a great disservice to our siblings of color, be they trans- or cisgender. From "the house elves like being enslaved" to the ambiguously East Asian character "Cho Chang" to a number of other instances, including antisemitism, all of these things have ruined the books and movies for people of color and other marginalized people long before JKR started tweeting. For that reason *alone* we ought to discard her work from the foundation of cultural relevance, in the interest of a more equitable and kind society. themarysue.com/is-jk-rowling-r…

@wolfwalks @gabboman the wafrn dev Wow, Ok, I had known she had money, I hadn't known the scale. Still, every penny that can be kept out of her hands, the better, can't make her poor, but can slow or stop her growth.
Fanfics are kind of a double edged sword, I know a few MLP/Harry Potter fics that fix at least some, if not a lot of the issues with the stories, fics that would make her head explode (sadly figuratively only), is it good or bad for fanfics that fix many of the problematic elements in her stories exist? Sadly they won't drown out her originals.
in reply to 🌓 Seph šŸ’ šŸ‘¾

"good" or "bad" on the piece-by-piece basis is kind of missing the point. Think about that concept - "fanfics that fix the problematic elements in her stories". Those still rely on her stories, right? If I go find a Harry/Draco fic, the fic writer assumes I already have a foundational knowledge of these characters, their dynamic, and the world they inhabit. And I do, that's why I go to look for those things! But then when that fic rockets into popularity on social media, it perpetuates the franchise, people who haven't engaged with the franchise are reminded and enticed into getting back into it, and so on.

And to that end, I don't think you or anyone else are "bad" for reading or consuming any kind of HP works, fan-created or otherwise. I think most people feel that way. This is a systemic problem and doesn't come down to any one individual, except, perhaps, JKR, for doing and saying the things she does. But with the amount of money and, with it, power she wields, we can treat her as an environmental force more than an individual.

But to that end, I'm sure that someone out there is making great fanworks that don't rely on the shorthand of the HP franchise, about magic or school dramas or whatever the case may be. And those are the kind of fanworks we ought to be uplifting and supporting. The point is that we dig it out at the root.

I once saw someone say "being trans is a lot like having been 5 years old once," like for me, my upbringing as one gender is part of my life, but isn't who I am today, as a man. I think HP is a lot like that for me. One time I was a fan of the franchise and I read all the books and watched all the movies. But much like having been a 5 y/o, I no longer scribble with crayons on the walls. HP stopped being something that could connect me with other people, and started being something that was a hurtful reminder that I was willing to overlook racism, antisemitism, and later, the author's transphobia, to play with a fantasy world - that my fantasy world was more important to me than those people and our relationship.

No fantasy world is worth hurting the other people in my life and in my broader sphere. So I used to be 5 years old, but now I'm not. I used to read and engage with HP, but I don't anymore. It was nice while it lasted but I'm building space for things in my life that don't hurt other people. That's a choice I made to prioritize real people rather than fake ones, and to prioritize building community over enriching someone who does this shit, you know?

in reply to wolfwalks

@wolfwalks Funny thing about fanfics, if they're done right, you really don't need to know anything about the series, and I'm proof of that, I've seen the first movie once, when it was new, never read the books. I know of the three main characters, and the professors, and the Dursleys, and that's about it, I really only know that the books have made changes by virtue of knowing about Rowling, its kinda easy to see the deviations when you know she'd rather be dead than allow something like that. It may be why I don't get what the big deal is beyond silencing/demonetizing Rowling, because the series for me is just something that exists, I know of it, but on a second hand basis mostly.
As to the fics, only the crossover ones as I'm a big MLP fan or rather MLP fandom fan, currently following some 200+ fics, a half dozen or so are HP crossover.
in reply to 🌓 Seph šŸ’ šŸ‘¾

The point is that we are trying to get to a point where I can say "J.K. Rowling" and you can say "who?"

As long as her work is still part of the same cultural osmosis that allows you to connect with those fics, anything she says or does will always be said or done as J.K. Rowling, the Suffering Single Mother Rags-to-Riches Author of the Beloved Harry Potter Series. We want her to be a person with the same voice as the rest of us. Right now, her voice is much, much louder than anyone else's: thepinknews.com/2026/07/13/amn…

You don't have to start as a fan of Harry Potter to say "it's not right for someone with this much money and influence to be silencing all criticism and using her power to hurt people." (In the UK, publicly critizing her is likely to get you sued.) If you're not a fan, you've already got a leg up on a lot of other people. Now we continue the work of making sure she stops silencing other people.

"waaaaaah wafrn mods are fascists bc they don't let me publicly endorse the work of a woman that literally uses her money to destroy trans people's lives waaaaaaah"

that's how they fucking sound from the perspective of a non-miserable person who doesn't throw a fit when they can't give attention to an obvious asshole

in reply to gabboman the wafrn dev

I have had problems with community moderators in the past, but IMO their point is invalidated by "I was warned for" not a direct ban they were warned allowing for some conversation on why the rules are like that.

I can understand a No JKR rule since JKR does go against Trans Rights and I am sure there are better authors to support.
