Is peertube a practical alternative to youtube for short instructional videos? Or is anything else an alternative? I know zero about this but would like to know more. Thanks.

Mostly I am recording short-format videos that enable English learners to watch 60-90 seconds of English (often quotations) as a loop so they can practice their listening and pronunciation skills. On YouTube the option to play the video as a loop is built-in when it's in the short format. I find repetition very helpful in language learning and teaching.
I could record these for all eternity and they will never generate income, so I don't care about monetization.

I just looked at #Loops. Appears to be in beta but evolving quickly? I get at most 1,000+ views for a given short video and the viewers are from many countries. They will want and need a simple click-and-watch format. Anything that looks too odd or requires them to join a new platform is not going to fly...

loops.video/v/cIWJ_fiLmY
Did that work for you either as embedded or click and view?

If not I can send one from my Mac to my phone, I guess. Any tips on how to upload and test would be welcomed, thanks very much!

That's what it looks like for me using FireFox on Linux. Far as I know loops.video is doing sign up and I think there are other instances, or you could spin your own up if'n you're inclined.

Hmm. I signed up, downloaded a Mac app, and tried and failed to upload two different short videos. Timeout errors. I'll have to explore more when I have time, I guess. Thanks for your help!

Videos also appear optimized for mastodon federation:
After an account is interacted with and has been federated, their account and future videos will also appear here
I've shared videos straight from my loops account with federation so you don't have to leave mastodon to watch them, click on my profile to check it, you'll see me reposting videos from a loops account of the same name, as another example you can also find dansup's loops account on mastodon
