In 1976, the Doctor Who serial The Masque of Mandragora shows Sarah Jane Smith eating an orange by directly biting it, and then removing the peel from her mouth.
I used to work for a Hong Kong Chinese family. One of the sons ate oranges and apples like that. Spit out the skins. Only person I have met that did that, except as a joke or for shock value.
In the US it's divided by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, media before that can be backed up for personal use, but not the stuff that came after, ie MP3 and DVD, not sure what else.
