So, I've posted on this topic on my Wafrn and I think on my personal blog here, but really I think its an admin topic, after all it goes directly to what kind of software I'm looking to host. Also it was set off when thinking about recording a video for #Loops , the video will fit fine, but the length limit has been a challenge at times.
Sure, @Daniel Supernault has said Loops will allow longer in the future, but I think we need a service that slots in between Loops and #peertube . And this complaint mirrors a complaint about the #Fediverse I have in general about all the new stuff coming out, and that there's nothing really new or different coming out.
No, really, think about it, go back to the older stuff, #diaspora , #Mastodon , #pleroma and #misskey , all micro blog services, but all distinctly different, no? But what do we get now? #gotosocial , nice, I like it, but once you get beyond the lack of a front end, something that I'm sure makes it confusing for newbies, what does it offer? Smaller, lighter, easier to install? In the hip and cool new language? To a user, those don't matter, it offers nothing new to a user, which isn't necessarily bad, but kinda disappointing to me, new should expand or improve the Fediverse in my not so humble opinion. Bring something new, add features, be differnt… Or at least steal from #friendica . No, really, Friendica is kinda crazy, what with a feed reader, Diaspora compatibility, and scheduling available from the web interface. And/or offer a queue functionality, something that's a really useful moderation tool.
And now we get back to video…
Remember I mentioned Loops? Its not the only Fedi #tiktok alternative, its just the one that's done the best at marketing, in fact there was one that shut down in a snit over the lack of adoption. Here we run into the same kind of problem, with everyone doing basically the same thing. Why not stand out? Offer multiple timelines, one for videos, maybe one for text? Allow microblogging like Mastodon as a secondary feature, prolly less capable than Mastodon, but for someone who mostly does videos but occasionally wants to say something, this'd be perfect. Or maybe offer that longer but not long video service I mentioned, maybe a ten minute limit? Longer than TikTok, but still on the short side, enough for a casual discussion of a topic, or an 'in depth' piece on a topic that really doesn't have much depth.
Meh, I prolly sound like an old man shouting at kids to get off of his lawn, don't I?
