Reminds me of the time when I walked from the rental car check-in parking lot to the air terminal - about 200 yards - wearing cotton jeans, a cotton shirt, shoes, and nothing else - at Jackson Hole - at -35F (real, not wind chill.) Half way I realized "I could die out here."

The cold weather is one way I can measure any changes with my cardiovascular health, if I can maintain my core body temperature during rest and known exercises and if there are any changes to blood flow to fingers and toes. If my fingers have degraded circulation and feel like frostbite is about to happen, I know to make changes to my diet and activity routine for better health and strength.

There is even a 30-30-30 rule for life-threatening frostbite/freeze. In a temperature of -30 degrees with a 30 mph wind, flesh will freeze in 30 seconds.

That's -30 Β°F.

One time, when it was very cold, I experimentally spat, and it was ice when it hit the ground. Generally, I always assume that, if my nostrils freeze when I inhale, it is at least -10 Β°F.

I once waited for a bus while the thermometer display on the bank read "-19." That was in the USA, so that was also Β°F.

-10 Β°F = -23 β…“ Β°C
-19 Β°F = -28 β…“ Β°C
-30 Β°F = -34.444444444 Β°C

I had a friend who worked at South Pole station - yup, the South pole, not the West one - which is at 9000 feet elevation and sometimes the C130 he flew in on had to keep the rear door open during the flight. They had serious bunny suits. I think that sunlight freezes solid down there.

My wife had a friend who got frostbite - he was a bombardier on a B17 dropping bombs on Germany during WW-II - his heated flight suit somehow got unplugged.

Occasionally we get below 0C here. Probably won't happen as often in the future. There are some mountains that get snow on top during winter, mainly during July and August. We do get nasty hail sometimes though!
