No fiber optical light pipes. (At one of the early Interop shows we had some people of the electrical union persuasion who were giving us trouble as we ran our network through the convention center. The normal peeling of $20 bills off of a wad did not work. So, because we were working with fiber optic runs we said "you know, these things you are abusing are fiber optics, pipes for light, not for electricity. So perhaps we ought to be working with the plumbers union rather than with your electrical union." We got cooperation after that.)
I hired a friend with plumbing experience to deploy fibre optics for an electric utility that was creating a networking subsidiary using their rights-of-way. He learned quickly and did a great job.
