I was in the US Navy for 6 years, and I wasn't drafted. I enlisted.

When I meet a flag-waver I ask "Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines? I was in the Navy for 6 years." It usually ends with them mumbling "Thank you for your service" and walking away.

Do you have to join the military to be a patriot? No.

You could run for elected office. You could join the Peace Corps. You could volunteer at a local hospital or school. You could teach in ordinary public schools.

You could do something more meaningful with your life than eating pizza and watching football games.

You could do something that shows you care about someone other than yourself.

And if you're displaying the flags of armies that attacked and killed the citizens of the USA, you are most certainly not a patriot.

Including the confederate flag which represents an army that attacked and killed citizens of the USA while trying to destroy the USA and no, after the start of the war citizens of the confederate states were not citizens of the USA.
