This is a serious conundrum. We have been brought up in this environment, this box, and we live in this box. Even our very thoughts and motivations are essentially in this box This is the box of ourselves and there is nothing outside of that box of our lives.
in reply to Khurram Wadee

... is it surprising that people will defend it, irrationally even?
in reply to Khurram Wadee

Get out of the box and view it from the perspective of those outside it to begin with.
in reply to Khurram Wadee

... usually, the only way out is some sort of severe trauma - or mind-altering substances.
in reply to Khurram Wadee

Maybe in one context but if you think that there's only one possible system then you're stuffed. See how other systems work and how your system is perceived by others. Then you have a chance.
in reply to Khurram Wadee

It’s all variations on a theme, really - that and abstract theorizing. Marx, for instance, did some genius-level analysis, but when it came to imagining a transition to a different state of being, all he could come up with was some sort of magical ā€œrevolutionā€; and how ā€œThe Peopleā€ could actually run the state he plopped onto some saintly sort of Dictatorship of the People. Sadly, this was all worse than useless. ;-(

This is all in the abstract. Anyone can daydream - but how do you Live?

I’m a big fan of small but meaningful steps - but it is interesting to see that even this is difficult. Don’t get me started again on the magical ā€œrevolutionā€ā€¦

in reply to Khurram Wadee

Such an extraordinarily difficult problem! Many a person has spent their lives on this alone. And it is that important too. But even if one can find a place to stand "outside of the box", yet the solution has to be somehow brought back in. Marx invoked "revolution" - but even that is not enough - and it is the wrong tool.
in reply to Khurram Wadee

True, it is all wishful thinking but if you have the means, you can go a live in another country to see what your home nation feels like from there. Marx was imagining a new way of structuring a fairer society but didn't really know how to get there. On an individual basis, you can do that.
in reply to Khurram Wadee

I do not so much believe in "The Individual". We live life largely as we were brought-up to, and see things as we were taught. We work and live in a society we understand, and we gain our feelings of being rewarded from the social status we obtain. As they say: "No man is an Island."

Now moving to another country is a very interesting idea. You might note that many expats find other expats from their home country and socialize with them...

in reply to Khurram Wadee

You mean emigrants. Sure, they might miss many of the familiar things but they can see their country from the outside. Many choose to stay, some go back home. That's sort of the idea.
