Trump Asks Congress for Formal Declaration of War

Trump wants to send American troops to Gaza, Panama, Canada, and Greenland.

On March fourth, 2025, President Trump asked a joint session of Congress for a formal declaration of war against those who were withholding territory from the US unjustly. "America has every right to rule Gaza, Panama, Canada, and Greenland," he said, "and they have no right to resist American rule. I'm pretty sure that in the Bible, God gave that land to the US."

Trump also suggested that, if Ukraine does not surrender to Vladimir Putin (whom he described as a "clever and pragmatic man"), the US will take control of it, and exploit its resources. "If you want peace, you have to pay the price," said Trump.

Before the election, I thought that the Republicans didn't look that much worse than the Democrats (and what a god-awful mess they are!). Trump surprised me. No. That's not right. Trump stunned me and the rest of the world. The man is completely insane. I have no idea what he might do next. Will Trump really declare war against the rest of the world? Four months ago I would have chuckled at the idea. Now I have no idea what he might do next. There seems to be nothing so insane that Trump won't do it. I just think of the craziest thing he could possibly do, and that's what he actually does.

How about we ask Congress for formal declaration of impeachment. Again. Third time's the charm.

Republicans control both houses. The only hope is for Republican members of Congress to rebel.

Trump didn't get them to rebel by insulting them and their wives. I don't know what it would take.

Trump once said that he could shoot someone dead on Fifth Avenue and still win primaries. Maybe if he raped an eight-year-old boy at a press conference that would do it. I'm not sure. It might.

I thought there needs to be an immediate threat to declare war. A bruised ego and losing ground in the economy for a failed presidency is now enough to start and/or continue wars?

What law or part of the Constitution requires that?

in reply to David

Banana Republicans like making everything an emergency. If they could take another dollar from a homeless person today, they would declare war over poor people and lock them all up
in reply to David

Not that the Constitution matters much to Republicans unless they want to force something through, "Me want land!" may be at play here as a 'certain circumstance'... ?

In the United States, only Congress has the power to declare war, as specified in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. However, the President can initiate military actions without a formal declaration of war under certain circumstances.
