When I was in my twenties, I used to think that male and female is all there is and that things like transgenderism is something psychological. Then I learned about how complicated the biology of sex is and then on top of that how it is compounded by social mores that it's a wonder that it's not more common.
@Khurram Wadee quite a long time ago, sorry can't remember how long, there was this article that appeared in one of the online news digests I used to visit. I think it was about an island in the Solomons where children were born female? and then at age 12 they grew penises.
That's all I remember about the article, I was astounded at the time!!! π
I'm not discounting the influence of media on psychology of vulnerable children. There are many factors that play and like most human decisions upon this planet, none of them is easy or simple. π
Just yesterday, we had an old episode of Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre World on (for background noise, if I'm being honest) and he was addressing the different recognized genders in the nation he was visiting. "Hermaphrodites" (in quotes because it may be an outdated term) were revered in that culture, because they were believed to be the embodiment of all it is to be human.
Oh! Here more and more public toilets are being designated unisex. It started with the disabled toilets and now they are turning all public toilets into unisex ones, of course they don't have urinals.
