While connecting to a conference call by phone, I've heard requests to press the pound or hash key but never the octothorpe key. My spell-checker thinks octothorp is e-less.

I was surprised to find 'octothorpe' on this list; it is a word I've used on occasion, although I didn't know that it was a recent invention, coined in 1968 by engineers at Bell Labs, which explains why it may be more prevalent among phreakers and programmers.
