I do not like a surveillance state. However, one place where it has been of help is for the homeless. In the Melbourne city area homeless people will actively look for private areas like back alleys where there are surveillance cameras. Why? Because it keeps the psychotic members of the public from beating them to death down a quiet alleyway at night.
@Muse knee-jerk reaction to that is that there's got to be a better solution to the problem. I personally have nothing against the idea of armed homeless people
