The record companies still get their cut and hold the debt for the advances over the band's head.
Until they "write off" the debt the band still receives little to nothing.
Stealing music just ensures that the performer/band's peonage lasts longer.

Years ago, at some concerts I attended, the band would sell their own records.

When Tuba Skinny busks in their home town of New Orleans, they sell their CDs in a stack in front of their tip bucket. The tip bucket has a poster stuck to it with the prices. They also sell their albums as vinyl.

Re: Tuba Skinny tip bucket. Doesn't stop the band's performance.

BTW, the two young guys with the ball caps playing clarinet were not members of the band. You'll see them walk away at the end, and Craig Flory sits back down in his chair. That's rather impressive because Tuba Skinny is the only band that plays this tune, that I know of. It's certainly not a standard.

Another one they rediscovered is Hot Town, written in 1929 by Fess Williams.
